Yea, i just read that they're paying him 1.2MM for this year, that's about right. I was thinking....maybe it would be best for the Flyers to just stick with what they got, with Defensemen.
They're at 54.5MM with only 2.4MM to spend. I don't wanna see them trade any of our other forwards, especially Knuble, since he gets alot of goals in front of the net on the PP. We have to consider that Joffrey Lupul and Martin Biron will be eligible for free agency after the 08-09 season. If Lupul scores 30 goals this season, he may take the same path as Ryan Malone did, and want anywhere from 4-5MM, since he's only making 2.9MM for next season. This is what i think the Flyers should do: 1.)Get Hatcher to retire, buy out his final year, or put him on Injured Reserve(so his salary doesn't go against the Cap); 2.) Trade Niitymaki so his 1.375MM is cleared off the cap. That would bring the Flyers down to 50.1MM. After the 08-09 season, we let Knuble go and bring in JVR, whom we can sign for under 1MM for an entry contract. Then we'd be able to bring Scott Munroe up from the Phantoms as a backup to Marty, give Lupul a new contract, and depending on where the cap is, get a puck-moving defenseman that we've been looking for. Liles just resigned with the Avs, Campbell and Redden will want too much money (and Redden's stock has gone down alot), so it looks like Mark Streit, Mikael Roszival, and Finger are the only ones left for the Flyers to look at. I think they need to develop the defensemen they got (Luca Sbisa, Janne Niskala, Ryan Parent, Marc-Andre Bourdon). We also got some guy from Calgary in exchange for Greentree. I would say we have enough defensemen in our farm system now. Right now our NHL team defense looks like this:
Timonen-Coburn
Eminger-Jones(once he signs)
Kukkonen-Parent

reasons for the blanks are we dont know what hatcher will do, have yet to see what will be done at the start of free agency, and there might be trades yet to come. You need 7 d-man in the nhl. Maybe they bring smith back he was cheap, so he would have a salery at 1.5 mill. Its hard to know what homer will do, other than the fact he wants to improve the defence. I would like to see a vetran d-man come here rather than a young kid. Thats why i still want hatcher on the team. I also want smith back, why do people not like a guy who is rough and tough and good in his own zone, plus he didn't get beat 1 on 1 that often. basically smith hatcher plus the young core is good if they dont sign a big name. We need more physically intimidating defence so far we have no one if hatcher retires. Thats a big issue you cant have a soft defence in the nhl especally today, you would also use them to clear the front of the net. It will require some finess to manage all of this and keep it under the cap. Recapping wat we need is 2 top 4 d-men that are more on the physical side insted of the finess side.
