I knew they brought Briere back too soon. Yea he scored today and the other game, but when you have an abdominal tear, and you're supposed to be out 3-4 weeks, you stay out that long. You don't come after 2 weeks, no matter how good you feel. Now he has a groin injury, though they didn't say how severe it is. The Flyers better handle this better and give him enough time to heal, since the Flyers have enough depth at center to make up for it.

Geez, seems like the injury bug really likes to hit the Flyers star players. Last year Gagne and this year Brier (although not as bad).

Sometimes it's a little hard to tell how well a player has healed up. I know that some players heal quickly.

P.S. when you play us soon, watch out for Grabovski and Schenn. Not household names but have been performing well. Hey, I heard you traded Downie to Tampa Bay, what do you think of that deal?

yea, you're telling me...I've been a Flyers fan all my life...for some reason or another, the Flyers always seem to get hit the hardest with injuries, although, the Pens have gotten hit hard this year and are missing Gonchar and Whitney. The reason why I called the Flyers medical staff out is because they are notorious for not handling injuries well (see: Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau, and Jeremy Roenick). Primeau and Lindros' careers ended because the Flyers medical staff didn't handle their injuries right and rushed them back too quickly.

As for Downie, I don't mind the trade because I never really was a big fan of him. I appreciated his hard-nosed attitude and his will to impress the coaches, but he's just a knucklehead right now making knucklehead mistakes with the puck. I feel, though, that he'll become a really good player with Tampa, given the fact that they don't have as much offensive depth as the Flyers do, and he'll eventually have a position there. Besides, the player got in return, along with pick, makes us the winner in this draft. We're getting a defenseman who put up 11 goals and 31 assists in his rookie year with the Sharks and who won the award for the best college player in 2006. Another trade I'm calling for is Scott Hartnell, Randy Jones, our prospect Andreas Nodl, and a pick for Jay Bouwmeester(Florida). I know that sounds like alot but I didn't agree with Jones getting a 2.75 cap hit over the summer for two years, Hartnell is making too much money(4.2MM cap hit) for his kind of production, and James VanRiemsdyke will be ready to step up next year and make an impact. Andreas Nodl will develop into a pretty good player, but we also have Claude Giroux to use in place of him (when Giroux comes up).

Right now, I'm all about bolstering the defense, because that's what the flyers lack there, is depth. They have Timonen and Coburn on the same line, but after that it gets shakey with Vaananen, Alberts, Kukkonen, Sbisa. Parent and Jones are on LTIR, and the Flyers just got Carle (who in my opinion, could turn out to be another Braydon Coburn). If it means giving up some offense to really shore up the defense, I'll accept it.

What about goaltending? I hear Biron has been inconsistant. As for Downie, maybe in Tampa he can cool off a bit cause he can go overboard with his antics at times (suspension last year for brutal hit).

everytime we think we have a goaltender we are very quickly proven wrong. they either were supposed to be good and really really weren't,(vanbeisbruck, pelletier, hackett, etc.), got it done in regular season but couldn't handle the playoffs (cechmanek, esche) or fooled with an outstanding post season only to come back the next year and look awful (boucher, biron). it's ridiculous. i don't think we'll ever have a good goaltender. haha so yea, biron isn't making me feel too confident right now, and nittymaki certainly isn't the answer

From what I've known I would have to agree. I remember Chechmanek, didn't think he was that bad really. As a Leaf fan, I've seen quite a few good goalies (Felix Potvin back in the early '90s, Curtis Joseph in his prime, and Ed Belfour, Vesa Toskala if he can get his game to what it was last year). My point is about that is they are out there, you just need to know who to trade for or sign. If I remember correctly, Bobby Clarke, while he was GM didn't put a very big emphasis on getting a great goalie and I think that hurt you guys a lot.

I agree and disagree with you on this. As a person who plays ice hockey twice a week, I know that the groin injury had nothing to do with the ab injury. The groin strain came from 2 weeks of not skating enough. It doesnt matter how seasoned you are, if you stop using your groin even for a short period of time and then go full force in a game your gonna blow it out. You have to ease back into it - lots of cardio and light skating. He needed at least another week or two just to get his lower leg muscles, and groin, back into game shape.

He was OK, nothing more. Stevens hated him and wanted to get rid of him. I think he made to many dumb mistakes anyway and usually let his anger cluod his better judgement which hurt the team.

Very very good point, agree 100%. Nitti ISNT the answer BUT, he is an excellent band aid for the short term. GET BIRON THE HELL OUTTA THERE!

For now, we're going to have to stick with what we got, unfortunately. However, I've heard rumors that our GM Holmgren was interested in getting Atlanta prospect Ondrej Pavelec. I, however, wouldn't mind seeing them go after Manny Fernandez from Boston, since Tim Thomas is their backup...but, I don't if he'll be the answer.

Don't forget you can also get Nikoli Khabibulen. I think he's on waivers right now.

I have to agree with that. He has skill, but unfortunatly for him he's a cheap shot artist imo.

Hello Red, Jury is still out on Fernandez here in Boston. He had what was probably his best game as a Bruin in Buffalo a couple games ago but hasn't played enough to show any consistency. Thomas isn't the back-up anymore as he's shown for a few years now that he's the real deal, no matter how unsettling his style of play appears.
I'm not sure if the B's are going to showcase Manny and trade him at the deadline or if they'll keep him for the rest of the season. Rask is good but I still think he's another year away from being ready gor the big show.
So, what do you think of Metro thus far? Has he lived up to my predictions?

Khabby was incredible in the game against the B's last night, but it's kind of weird that he hasn't played worth a damn until his team signed another 5.5 mil a year goalie. He's one of those goalies though that seems to need a foot in his rear or on his neck at all times.
I think Biron will come around, IF the Flyers are successful at upgrading their defense. I never would have expected them to be hanging with the bottom-feeders at this point in the season and I think that is directly conected to their questionable defense and lousy coach (sorry, I still think the Fly's should have a better coach then Stevens)
I also think Nitti could be a 1A goalie if Biron can step up to the plate.
Hell, look at the Pen's when they had Barrasso and Wregget. Neither one could carry a team alone, but together it worked for them.

Khabibulin is way better than Biron but he also has a 6.75MM cap hit and in order for the Flyers to get that they would have to dump Hartnell and Jones (who still isn't back from LTIR). I think Nikolai is 35 now, too. He's not the as durable as Brodeur, so it makes me wonder if he's capable of putting up the numbers he put up in Tampa. I don't know...for now I'd rather upgrade the Defense by getting Bouwmeester and then have Stevens fired.

To Dos Equis: I've been really impressed with the B's play so far. They really man handled Montreal tonight. Congratulations on finally beating those guys.

Didn't think about the cap hit, knew he was expensive. I'm just thinking you guys would have him as a short term deal. That poses a good question though, that may be a little too much to give up unless you get something substantial in return.

I once saw Robert Reichel do a slap shot on a penalty shot if that makes you feel any better!

Daily Horoscope for June 2

It's one of those difficult days when anything can and will happen. Someone you were relying on might let you down, plans could be changed at the eleventh hour or a machine could go on the blink. To make matters worse, your energy levels are very erratic, so you feel full of beans one minute and ready to go to sleep the next. Don't make the situation worse by eating foods that give you a high followed by a slump.
