Islanders have something to prove to Oilers

i liked smyth for a minute there, but in my opinion, he proved himself to be a phony....
it sucks that the Isles had to give up youth to get him, but i can't fault the team for trying to get a spark going into the playoffs... you really never know what might happen in the post-season.

Wrong....you don't sign a guy like Smyth unless you're positive he'll sign a long term deal- One player can't take you to a cup championship unless you have a legitimate team surrounding that one player- The Islanders were not even close to being a sound team with any shot of going far into the playoffs and Garth Snow should have realized this. Not a good move for the Islanders.

OH, so you knew all along that no. 8 Carolina would beat no. 8 seed Edmonton in 2006?
NYI were under the impression smyth would stay, otherwise they most def wouldn't have pulled the trigger on that deal (why i consider him a phony)...

it's real easy to have 20/20 hindsight...

...and they didn't get just one player last spring.
you can't expect any team to give up on itself, especially not a playoff team. they did what they thought they needed to do in order to maximize their chances of success in the postseason. it backfired, but at least they tried.

..if he was SOOOO upset about having to leave Edmonton he would have taken the money and stayed. What was the difference,$500,000 over a few seasons or something? I mean, he was BAWLING on camera! Should have known he's unperdictable after that display. They tried, it didn't work out and the team has moved on. It's a tight division, I think the Isles will be competitive for a playoff spot all season.

The real mistake was Milbury taking Nilsson over Zach Parise. Zach is a star and would have been a great Islander like his Dad. Lou Lam couldn't believe Milbury passed and almost came out of his shoes to draft Zach next pick...

Firts off the guy is not phony because he chose the best place for him to play. And second, Ive been saying this since the trade, once Nilsson or O'Marra do something in the NHL you can say it was a bad trade. It was a trade that helped get us into the playoffs where so far we've given up nothing but a couple of prospects who may never become anything in the NHL.

And just to prove that Nilsson has managed to become a healthy scratch in Edmonton now bc MacTavish is tired of Nilssons inconsistancy and bad attitude. Damn I wish we had kept him...

and Sam Champion you are exactly right...and thats not hindsight talking bc most Islander fans had a heart attack when they passed over Parise on draft day, and that was way before we saw what he could do in an NHL uniform

much respect for the Devils, zero for that bafoon dolan and his a$s teams.. I can't knock Charlie Wang, because he pretty much saved my Isles from folding, he just got too drunk off the milbury kool-aide for a minute there....

come on... that whole crying fit and all those emotional stmnts about LI, history, tradition, etc....and then jump ship for less money??
but i agree w/ you about Nilsson and O'Marra, they were potential NHLers, at best. they may just become great someday, but so far, they haven't done much at all.

potential is potential and I don't mind sacrificing that for proven talent in any professional sport. You could name chapter and verse of "top porspects" throughout history that have gotten traded and not done a GD thing. They took a shot, couldn't resign him and that was that. Other than Luongo, Wade Redden (and did he even suit up as an Isles?) or maybe Chara I can't off the top of my head recall anyone the Isles have traded in the past few seasons that have panned out to be phenomenal players. Y'know, like when I got sick to my stomach seeing Justin Williams raise a cup in Carolina.
