Bigger deal ... A win for the Rangers or Ovechkin?

Full story: Newsday

Before this series started, a good little mental exercise would have been to get yourself to put away all loyalties, put yourself in the NHL marketing wizards' shoes and figure out which would be better for the league: A showcase win for the greatest player or a showpiece win for the biggest market? This is still a good question, although it ...

You mentioned that Boston was the 'President's Trophy' winner, but I believe San Jose had one more point 117, to capture that meaningless award. Good article besides.

Herrmann is drinking the MSG Kool Aid. Queen Hendrik has saved the day so far, with an assist from the cross bar (Ovechkin hit two cross bars in third period). The competition will get tougher. Boston awaits the winner of this series. The Bruins have more grit than either Washington and New York. Their wingers are more physical than either one. If New York wins the series, Boston will expose the Ranger defensemen whom rely on finesse. The Cup champion will be a Western Conference team where the real hockey is played.

The Caps are certainly not out of the series. Hockey playoffs are won by hot goalies, "good pitching beats good hitting". Lundquist was Hottttt last night, now its up to Ovechkin and Caps to respond in Wash. As long as Avery continues with SMART penalties, 24 pm. 0 pts. in 4 games, the Caps can still win.

I'm guessing your favorite team is whomever is playing the Rangers. Quite a life you lead there, you pathetic loser. I'm also guessing your real loyalty lies with another local team that hasn't sniffed the playoffs since last Century.

Boston does not await the winner of this series as the sceond round is re-seeded. If the Caps find a way to come back and win. Boston will play the lower remaining seed.

Good read Mark. Except for sarcastic comments like this that have no basis in fact: "let alone whatever part of the country will pay attention to hockey." The sport has been here for the better part of 100 years so someone is watching. All you "sports" writer guys should add it to your portfolio instead of the constant insults so that you dont have to cover it. Cmom man get a clue.

It seems obvious who the league(Bettman) want to win the series. Even in the playoffs, Avery still has a target on his back. I am not saying they were not penalties, that should have been called, but how many non-calls did the Caps get away with. It seems,by direction of Bettman to keep an extra set of eyes on Avery. Lets just keep it fair. Those refs last night should go back to eating donuts.

I'll give you the analogy as to my favorite local team " The 4 time consecutive Stanley Cup Winning Dynasty NEW YORK ISLANDERS". However, you're wrong about "last century"; 2002 L-7 Tor.,03'L-5 Ott.,04'L-5 TB,07" L-5 Buff., certainly not a good playoff run for the Isles. Also, "pathetic loser", if can't make a factual statement, you 99%+++ would not be able to back up your unnecessary comment.

You are right as to some non-calls that the Caps got away with last night. At least twice a Cap player turned away from the play awaiting a penalty call. Regarding Avery, did you see the look on Tort's face when Avery hit Cap player on icing call with 3 min.left. Avery only got a roughing, it should have been a major 5 min.
Avery is and always will be a detrement to any team he plays for. The Ranger annoucers stated he's taken unnecessary penalties. They even were woundering why he was on the ice with 2-3 min. to go.

As a Ranger fan I am embarassed by Avery's actions and his performance in this series. He's a better player than he has shown and the swipes with the stick and and his fists that he has taken have been ridiculous. That said the Rangers are eeking out these wins and I remain very guarded about their chances the rest of this series and beyond. But the last people we should be hearing from are Islander fans. They really should not be commenting on the Rangers or hockey in general because it's been 16 years since they won a playoff round and the so called dynasty was in one of the least competitive eras of NHL hockey. There wasn't a team that could hold the Islanders jocks back then because the Islanders were built with top draft picks from the 70s. Give a team a top ten draft pick every year for five years and watch them turn around their organization. A lot of credit should go to Bill Torrey and Al Arbour for building those teams but those days are over. The Islanders haven't been relevant since the late 1980s. It's time to move them out to pasture. Kansas City here I come!

There have been so many critical calls and non calls. Here's what I've seen:

Hartnell throws his stick at a Pittsburgh player - no penalty shot

J. Staal goes to the net in OT, holds the Flyers' player stick and the Flyers player gets called for hooking - Result, 5-3 goal for the Pens in OT

Columbus D man (unsure who) plays with 2 sticks for about 10 seconds - no penalty

I cant even begin to mention the missed and screwed up calls both ways in the caps/rangers series.

Montreal can say they were a "4 time consecutive Stanley Cup Winning Dynasty" too..... but I don't think that's any solace to them today.

I caught that by the announcers too. I was kind of waiting for someone to say something.

Avery has incredible speed, strength, and agility ... it's just a matter of him using them in the right way. Unfortunately, he has yet to do so in the playoffs. Aside from one or two rough games, he was pretty well-bahved during the season. Right now, I cringe when I see him on the ice.

If the Rangers do win this series, it's only gonna get worse in Boston. They're gonna hit Avery just a little bit harder than the Caps, and if he keeps responding like this, he's gonna have to buy the entire PK unit a few rounds after each game.

Anyone who believes the Rangers are playing well are absolutely kidding themselves.... Like Washington, they're a one-trick pony. Success begins and ends w/Lundpiss. Game 4 was entertaining. I've never actually seen a team play 5 minutes of hockey and be absolutely, positively dominated for the other 55 and still come out on top. But somehow, there's optomism. Keep it up Hank... better not let up one bit... pressure's on you buddy.... your 19 other teammates sure as heck don't look too good.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Scorpio

It will be easy to let things get on top of you today, especially if you're already feeling rather tired and listless. Do yourself a favor and keep away from anyone who often makes you feel a bit fed up or defensive, because they're the last person you want to be around at the moment. They'll make your spirits sink down to your ankles in a flash, and who needs that?
