This was an excellent article. I think Peter Laviolette would be the best choice for the Flyers in terms of getting a new coach. Stevens just doesn't have the mentality and experience to take the Flyers where they need to be.

Stevens is a fine coach in my opinion. He has won the Ahl championship with basically the same players. When he calls out his players they respond. I do see where your comming from with the lack of expierence. I think he has the second most seniority with one team in the entire eastern conferance. Lindy Ruff has the most seniority with one team with Buffalo. However if I had to pick one person to replace him, I would look at Tom Reney, Pat Quin, Peter Laviolette, Craig Mctavish, Bob Hartley (I like the way he handles a bench).Possibles to get fired, Mike Keenen, Dave Tippett, Craig Hartsburg. Remember none of these guys have won a cup before.

Mike Keenen has won a cup as a coach not sure about Bob Hartley. And I know Hartsburg was fired earlier in the year. Anyways didnt want people to give me all kinds of stats. Also I dont see a need to fire Stevens. Just wanted to say that, i think he can be seen as an elite coach in the next couple seasons.

Well i wouldn't consider Tom Renney, but I like your mentioning of Pat Quinn. He's a well respected coach around the NHL. Bob Hartley won the Cup with the Avs back in 2001, so he has some experience. I just don't think the playoffs respond well enough to Stevens and I think they don't seem motivated to play a full 60 minutes and look at each game as a battle. This team has the mentality that they'll be able to get themselves back into a better position if they have a bad effort one game or something like that...there needs to be a coach who brings accountability and can utilize the players as best as possible. I think Pat Quinn, Bob Hartley, or Peter Laviolette would be fine choies to replace Stevens. I don't even know why Homer is saying that he's going to keep the coaching staff the way it is, because Holmgren isnt a patient man, and even threatened the team back in the Fall that he'd bring in Brendan Shanahan, which means certain players could be out of a job (at the time it was).

I posted prior to seeing your second post acknowledging the Hartsbrug dismissal.

Very good article. Says what just about every Flyers Fan thinks about this team. I don't see Stevens getting fired, but he might be on a short leash at the begining of next season. What they need is a defensive coach behind the bench. They didn't have one this year as all the coaches except Stevens were offensive players in their careers. They also need a coach who can make adjustments in game. Stevens answer was to always change the lines, but never change their philosophy during the game. THe salary cap is anpther issue. Holmgren giving big money to players like Lupul who I think is just a waste of roster space. He doesn't back check and only seems to show up every other game or so. Plus Please Paul, no more NTC or NMC's. We also need some physical defense men as well as puck moving defense men. If this playoff series with Pittsburgh proved any thing it's we need to have physical d-men that can knock the forwards out of the crease area so they can't get to the puck to score garbage goals. That is just my take on what should be done this off season.

Very true because richards, briere and carter just are not physical or do not know HOW to be physical enough to win a cup..

Richards was a physical force in the playoffs, Carter was hurt and someone who is 6 3 can be physical. I would agree that briere needs to go there is no space for him.

David01, I agree that the Flyers need a guy with a killer instinct on forwards, but I'd rather just let the players we have develop into having killer instincts. Claude Giroux is going to be a superstar in the NHL and I can see a killer instinct within him, despite him being a diminutive winger, thought taller than Briere. But anyways, that'll come on its own. What the Flyers really need is what I was saying is the right coach who utilize the Flyers talent up front properly, a crease clearing, physical defenseman, a D-man with a blast from the point, and a goalie prospect that wil develop into a bonafide no.1 for the future. They can just trade or acquire a goalie to man the pipes while the prospect develops.
