Flyer fans are saying the team "never won anything " with Carter and Richards. To a CBJ fan, annual playoff appearances, including an Eastern Conference final and a Stanley Cup final, are hardly nothing.

Way to stir the pot on something you, yourself have deemed a non-issue. Why write about it, then? Why bring it to the attention of people who didn't already know - and didn't need to know - that one of this team's new "saviors" has a bad reputation. Congrats on painting the canvas poorly for him in Columbus.

If the hard-partying lifestyle of Carter is true then he will fit perfect with the leadership of CBJ locker room. Lets just see how his season shapes up once it hits the post-holiday slog...

The same stories have been told about Jake V. being a fish and that being the cause of his poor conditioning. Let's just call it even and look forward to more goals and points than what Jake put up through his final 20 games with the CBJ.

"And Holmgren, who is one of the most honest men I have ever met"

I hope this is meant as irony, or tongue in cheek, since this is the same guy that was telling Carter, his agent, and the media he was not being discussed in trade talks all the way up to the moment he was traded.

Interesting that some of you are commenting on Philadelphia taking slaps at Carter after he leaves by taking slaps at Voracek after he leaves.
He can't be bad, he's not even Russian.....

If having a post game beer now and then results in a player such as Carter then I demand every Jacket player 21 or older join in-especially Steve Mason.

This story is much to do about nothing, besides, Carter doesn't drink beer often but when he does he prefers Dos Equis; how can anyone fault him for that.(awesome beer btw)

The story was by a gossip columnist, not a sports reporter, in the Philadelphia paper. If Bluto and D-Day can score like Richards and Carter, sign them up now.

If this is true... Question for everyone, if you were in your 20's or 30's with no kids and millions of dollars at your disposal would you stay at home and train like a robot? Or would you go out and enjoy your youth and have fun as a professional athlete? I know what i would do!

Flyers fan here, and these stories did not pop up right after Richards and Carter were traded. These were running themes for the 5 or 6 years they were with the organization. Richards' commitment and maturity has always been questioned, whether rightfully and wrongfully, and Carter has been viewed as soft and doesn't show up for the playoffs. Both are great players, but to say that these issues only popped up after they were traded is completely untrue. IN fact, they were beaten to death here for years.
While you can say both players led the Flyers to the Finals only a year ago, they were also one win away that season from not even making the playoffs. The fact is, the rollercoaster of effort the team had during the Richards/Carter era got a couple coaches fired, a bunch of their friends traded, and finally, themselves traded.
It's one thing to be rumored to be a party animal, but it's another thing to be the cornerstones of the franchise and have rumors follow you for 5 or 6 years that they're entitled, don't try too hard in practice, or have locker room issues with players and coaches much more respected than them, i.e. been around a long time and/or have won Stanley Cups.
I for one am looking forward to the drama settling down now that the two of them are gone. I also think it's for the best that the two of them were split up, as they were best buds. It's probably for the best of their careers. You guys got a good player, but let's not pretend that both of them are suddenly being vilified now that they're gone.
To me, their trades signaled that the rumors were true, at least in part. Otherwise, why trade away the faces of the franchise?

Why do writers always have to ruin good movie characters with references to players?

If any hockey player was anything like Bluto or D-Day, he/she would be a legend.

I'm glad you wrote this because I'm sure the rumors have been all over Columbus just as they've been in LA. Both Richards and Carter have a rep for partying, just like most people in their 20s. Unfortunately, the people spreading the rumors are internet folks who are hiding behind the monitor, just like the 2 squealers from the Flyers dressing room. Philly fans and media have a tendency to run their players out of town and what they've done here is no different, and now with this story the organization looks really bad.

The person above said Richards and Carter didn't do much in the playoffs but that's garbage. Richards is a heart and soul player while Carter's game is more understated. He's had bad luck with injuries in the playoffs but each time he either played through them (seperated shoulder) or came back early (two broken feet in 2010, sprained MCL this season).

The only thing I agree with is that it's best for them to get out of that environment. Next up, if Giroux and Van Riemsdyk start to suck, they'll be villified and sent packing. And god help Pronger if he isn't ready for the season because many see him as the main problem in Philly, not these two.

Booooo, Hisssss.

All the normal Buuckeye fans must be converting this year because they seem to not know much about CBJ' unpredictable night-to-night performance, albeit, from hard partying. Some in the know have scoop where it comes from.
Being hung over in the a.m. if you empty trash cans or enter data into a computer may be fine but earning millions is unacceptable-unless the fans are OK with losing the team.
And for the poster that claims its OK to party it up because the player has millions and is young needs to remember the players commitment for being payed for the millions they earn.

Diner??? Diner??? Katz' is NO Diner!
Otherwise, a good column, even the poetry reference! Why should a an athlete allows a coach to determine their personal choices (i.e. the choice to choose alcohol, a legal substance) if it does not interfere with his on-ice performance?
