What a bunch of wimps. I thought hockey players were supposed to be tough? Aww, he hurt their feelings.

Dickhead deserves what he got!

What has happened to the first amendment in this country. I hope Sean sues the NHL. I didn't think the NHL became the National Whiners League. What a bunch of wimps. It's not my dads NHL anymore, when men were men and sissy's need not apply

F*ck that. The Ho's a Ho!

Are you kidding me? All he did was comment on the fact that Canadian hockey players tend to date his ex-girlfriend. He didn't call her or the other players a deragatory name and did not say anything that was false. This P.C. B.S. is a joke, especially in hockey of all places.

Avery referred to his former girlfriends as 'sloppy seconds' which is a pretty lame thing to do. He belongs in pro wrestling or the ECHL.

No freedome of speech in Canada? Ok, I know this is not a free speech issue, but rather and employer-employee issue, yet still, why can't the guy speak his mind, even if it is crude and rude.
I think he used the term "sloppy seconds" to refer to his former girlfriends, but I could be mistaken

Dumb and Dumber. Of course who am I to comment on some jerk hockey player and his idiot actress friend. They both make a ton of cash so they must me doing something right to be so adored by the public. Go pro team and TV. Keeps us from feeling, thinking and doing. We'll just watch you live your life!! fun!

I like how the Tribune has fueled the one-sided "rivalry" with the Red Wings by stating in the headline that Avery is an ex Red Wing. He played with the Red Wings for two seasons 6 years ago! He went to the Kings and then the Rangers, now with the Stars.

Trib, why didn't you get the quote right? He didn't say "former girlfriend" he said "sloppy seconds". Anyone who reads your article is going to have NO idea why he was suspended.

I can't stand Bettman. Look out folks, this is where where're headed. No free speech, PC rules!
ChiliMac, they put it in parentheses so you would know that was where the inappropriate language was inserted. And to the rest of you, yes, you have no free speech rights where your employer is concerned. So get off it already.
Screw the freedom of speech arguement, he's not being put in prison.
Personally, I don't want to see the NHL turn toward the Thug Life like the NBA and NFL. |
He wants the NHL to "market their villians." Great! just what the pro sports world needs at this time.
Why did the Tribune feel the need to censor the term "sloppy seconds"? Is that a bad term?
Why did he get suspended for that? I don't think there is anything overly derogatory about that term. It's not particularly nice, but it's a common term that people use to refer to an ex. I think the suspension is unwarranted. It's not like he called them "f**king ex-b*tches". The league and his teammates are acting like he went out and killed someone. |

NHL? What is this NHL you are speaking of....

The 1st Amendment doesn't apply in employee-employer situations. 1st Amendment is a limitation on government, not a private employer. There is no protection against an employer taking action against an employee for comments they make that the employer may deem offensive or may adversely affect their business. Look at the John Rocker case with the Atlanta Braves years ago, or other notable situations.

I would say I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't understand why Avery was wrong -- but I feel much more sorry for the family and co-workers and neighbors of such a creature. Notice I didn't mention anything about that person's "friends."
Basically, if you don't get it, maybe y ou need to accept the fact that you're just as despicable and just as big a jerk as Avery. |
