Full story: Newsday

The Rangers will be waiting a few more hours, or maybe even another day, to find out whom their second-round opponent will be.

What time is the Islander game tonight? Let me Guess Dipietro should get nominated over Lundqvist for the Venzina as well.

Wow, that was just brilliant. Jagr can't take a hit?!? He takes them all the time, and usually a defender just bounces right off him and Jagr continues to control the puck. He is still considered one of the toughest players to cover. He looks winded? He's skating harder and backchecking more than he has all season. I'm happy he turned it on just for the playoffs. He doesn't take penalty shots? Yeah, there's a reason for that, he's not very good at them. Why waste a shootout chance with a player who has never been dominant at shoot outs or breakaways. It's called a team first attitude. And finally, the illegal stick issue. The guy gets caught with an illegal stick, what, two years ago? And you bring it up just so you can talk trash about the guy. I'm pretty sure other superstars and scrubs have been penalized for that as well.

The point being, Jagr is playing great hockey, and you have very limited hockey knowledge, so your argument is null and void. Good day sir.

My guess is that you havent watched Jagr play over the last 1/4 of the year.

"but your not allowed to use a illegal stick though"

The all star game is voted on by fans. Each team needs to have at least one representative participating in the all star game. At the time, Lundqvist probably didn't deserve to be in the all star game. That was when he was going through a rough patch, so Gomez was named to the team. As for the Isles, the only stand out name on that team is Dipietro. Did he deserve to be named to the all star team as one of the three best goalies in the East? That is debatable. But, since there are no other stand out performers in the Isles organization, and at least one player had to be named to the team, then the nod goes to DP. I'm not knocking the Isles, the Rangers were in the same boat. There were many players who had better numbers than Gomez did, and didn't make the all-star team, but since every team needs to have a representative, then Gomez was the choice.
As for the Vezina, it is voted on by the 30 GM's in the league. People who's jobs it is to study players, and their accomplishments.
I believe that to be named as a finalist for the Vezina, or any other end of the year award speaks volumes as opposed to being named to the all star team.

So did DP. It really worked out well for him; getting hurt in the skills competition.

Isles fans love to point out that their goalie was in the all-star game. He sure wasnt voted in. He was selected by the NHL, cause other goalies couldnt/didnt want to play, and because they wanted someone to represent the Asslanders.

the old allstar game argument. Brilliant.

Let me guess its better to make an all star game then to be a runner up for MVP at the end of the season?

Thats the same mentality that has made the islanders the laughing stock of new york sports for a quarter of a century

Although it was not central to Staple's article, I take small issue with his comment, "Marc Staal is the defensive leader of a capable group." With all due respect to Mr. Staal, who has all the makings of a great one, the defensive leader of this team is none other than Dan Girardi. Anyone who watches the Rangers consistently would agree, I think.

Top 3 every year? 6th in GAA, 18th in save percentage this year. Not sure that qualifies him as a one of top three goalies in the league.

heres something to make it easier for you

the vezina nominations take a poll of all the gms in the league to choose the top goaltender.

The top 3 votegetters get nominated, aka judged to be the top 3 in the league.

They take everything into account.

I hear that at DP's summer goalie camp Day 5 is themed "Guest Analyst During Playoffs". Rumor is that the pretty boy haircut is included, I wonder if they'll give a guy with a rug the credit off the fees.
