Keep Isles with their namesake

Full story: Newsday

We have come to praise the Islanders, not to bury them, and definitely not to remind them of the old song, "Everything's up to date in Kansas City." Here and now, while their theme at the Coliseum ought to be ...

Mark, love the piece. But I cannot agree with you on how the Islanders' roster is being passed off as a youth movement when it's really junk.

Okposo missed extended time, stunting his development and perhaps costing him a spot in the Young Stars game. He's 20.
Bailey's a kid. Tambellini, Nielsen, Campoli, Gervais, Comeau... look, none of them are A+ talents, we know that. But the Isles need to see what they could become, and that's what this year is about. The fans knew this was coming going in.

Look, pal! This is a serious issue and no time to spew your Rangers bias. When your team stinks and is unwatchable there is a tendancy for a family who pays $15000 a year in property tax to be abit more careful with their disposable income. The reason they stink is because they house their team in an outdated antiquated arena that can no longer attract a family of mice let alone a quality free agent. If you are a true fan and member of The Hockey Community, you would root like hell for your chief rival to survive on The Island and re-emerge as a competitive force for the sake of The League!

These do-nothing local politicians are the same ones who let the Jets leave Hofstra (and the Island) for good.

The picture of your 15 year contracted goalie is priceless. Too bad its only a picture. If you want to have a sellout at a home game, build a 5000 seat arena.
As for graves, go ahead Mark Hermann, jump in, you stink just like the islanders(28 points).

Great article.

I wasn't alive when the Dodgers and Giants left, but I imagine the atmosphere was somewhat similar to what we see with the Islander's situation today. Crappy, hack politicians and a greedy owner trying to squeeze juice that just ain't there.

Look, I know the team has sucked for years now, but that won't always be the case. But if LI loses the Islanders, then Wang, Suozzi, Murray and Paterson will need a reserved space on their headstones, because that will be their LI legacies.

wangs a moron, born loser, wackjob old man who needs to sell to a local owner. A new owner could hire a gm and coach who might actualy be good instead of hiring ahl coaches and a backup goalie as gm

in 2002 and in the early 90's and from 1975-1988. You couldn't get a ticket, the team has fans, lots of them, its just that the team has been horrible lately. If they had a 1st place team you wouldn't be able to get a ticket again. If you build it they will come.
Oh and PS, everyone talks about how the rags pack that house, yeah, they pack it good with corporate attendance, 90% of that place can barely tell you what offsides is let alone name more than three players on that team. So dont give me that crap. MSG was a ghost town when they sucked 5 years ago. Half filled with other teams fans and the whole 9 yards, New yorkers are notorious fair weather fans, no matter what side of the east river you live on.
Even the Yankees couldnt get 1/3 of the stadium filled in the early 90's.

The Islanders don't have someone in the youngstars game because it's political. Kyle Okposo has better stats than Steven Stamkos but he wasn't the #1 pick.

As for the Isles trading down, they had to. They have a better prospect in Russia in Kirill Petrov than the man picked at #5 Luke Schenn or Filatov.

Everything else is right on. I hope you and Newsday keeps backing this,

BRAVO MARK HERRMANN..

As a member of the LEGION of diaspora'ed LI'ers from the 70's, 80's and 90's, it takes something a little more than Mom, deli's, pizza parlors and Carvel to get me to come back to LI to SPEND TOURISM DOLLARS IN THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD during the winter months.

I have attended quite a few Islander road games over the year as well and I am always impressed with the number of Isle jerseys in the stands for these road games.

There's an overlooked winter tourism market that the LH and the Islanders
will provide a Beacon for Long Island and the Town of Hempstead.

No Islanders?
I (and many others) will wait for the summer months and catch a Yankee game.

As long as chuckie is paying for it fine, but I'm one overtaxed islander who can't afford to build or refurbish an arena for a bunch of rich jocks to play in. Any extra money can be better spent to improve infrastructure and LOWER taxes not raise them.

I love how Ranger fans always have something to say...yea...so the Islanders suck. But looks like just about every Ranger fan forgets the team has been in the NHL half of the time the Rangers have and won as many stanley cups. So what does that say for the Rangers....only 4 cups as an original six team? I'd rather route for the team that won 4 in a row. I garentuee your only response is going to be something about DiPietro....Guess what? Noone cares!

We're not just talking about an ice hockey team here.

We're talking about an institution that has been one of the cornerstones of Long Island culture through most of her modern history.

Old and crumbling as the colesium might be, she's our first real and true sports arena...once even home to professional basketball...and countless weed stenched rock concerts. ;-)

We can't allow this to end without a thorough attempt at a solution.

Long Island has had sports teams; the ABA NY Nets, the Suffolks Ducks (hockey) the LI Tomahawks (lacrosse) and now the Ducks of baseball.

But there has been only one team (a feared dynasty at one time) that was named not for anything but we ourselves.

We call ouselves New Yorkers...as NY is our home state.

But there's only a tiny handful of people called "Islanders."

And when you say that you're from "The Island," millions of people in this country know exactly what you mean.

Please, let The Islanders stay on The Island.

Rebuild the team...rebuild the colesium...for the most special island in the country.
