Online commentary: Kings' Blake needs to go

Full story: LA Daily News

If the Kings' Rob Blake wasn't so good, this wouldn't be so awkward. Blake, the club's aging captain, has to go.

As for "losing his drive," the opposite is true. He sucked from the beginning of the season up until 15 or 20 games ago, and since then he has been kicking ass.

Jack Johnson lives with Blake and talks about how they sit and watch hockey games together, and he constantly picks Blakes brain for advice. They both started playing together when Crawford paired them on D, which he wasn't doing earlier in the season.

Seriously, have you even been watching the games?

You are right on the most important point though, which is that his biggest contribution this season would come from what he can bring in a trade.

Are you kidding me? Jack Johnson will not get better with Rob Blake around? Rob Blake is a two time Stanley Cup Finalist, Norris trophy winning defenceman who can teach a young guy like Johnson a lot about how to carry himself. Have you even been watching the games lately? He was hurt at the beginning of the year with the hip surgery but has come around a great deal in the last one and a half months. Maybe letting Crawford go would be the best thing this team could do NOW!

Uh... one of the top four players in franchise history? When did five come before four? DIONNE, TAYLOR, VACHON and ROBITAILLE are unquestionably the top four players in franchise history.

Mike,
FYI, Johnson bought his own place some time ago. He isn't learning from Blake, I think it's the other way around now.
Blakes time is over with the Kings. It's nearing the time for him to retire. He's not a Chelios or Draper. It's time for him to go.

taz, it's people like you that give hockey in l.a. a bad name. could you BE any more clueless?

blake is no chelios? no draper? no johnson? come on, man. if you were trying to be funny...don't give mcdonalds your two weeks. blake is playing as well as chelios has lately, and would probably continue to do so -- so long as he was healthy (which wasn't the case earlier in the season) and had the desire. he's hardly "learning from jack johnson". that was d-u-m dum. sure, giving blake another viable chance at a Cup would be good for him and great for us (based solely on the return), but none of this talk should, in any way, decrease the impact that he's had on this team -- both in years past and in the past couple of months.

sure, the kings are not doing well, that's an argument you could make. but you shouldn't. it is hardly due to the play of rob blake that the kings sit comfortably in dead-last. besides, that's where you'd hope we would finish during rebuilding years, rather than in the 11th - 20th draft pick range.

the kings are doing things correctly for the first time in their history, and i, for one, am extremely pleased about it and excited for the future.

Amen. Someone finally stated the obviou in print. Blake only cares about himself and should not be captan of this team.

Instead of harping on salary stats from 8 years ago, how about these stats. The Kings are 14th in goals per game & 28th in goals against, 5th in power play % and 28th in penalty kill %, but having a high priced defenceman is "draining resources for much needed scoring." What?!?

Or instead of hearsay about how Johnson is being held back by Blake, how about some real facts. The Kings have 3 defenceman tied up for next season, Johnson, Lubo & Preissing and in that order they're 4th, 5th & 6th in penalty killing ice time per game. Blake leads the team in that category, along with blocked shots & hits by a defenceman. How do you replace that if you trade him? Harrold? He's another power play specialist, which makes Preissings multi year deal even more curious. Next season Johnson is the only one of those 3 that can carry a bigger load in the defensive end, so Blake is still needed & he'll resign for less than the 6 million he's making now.

This blueline is built for the PP, not for controling the defensive end, which was a mistake by Lombardi. Modry is 3rd in penalty killing ice time per game this team is so thin in thier own end. Blake right now is the Kings best defenceman in the defensive end. If you've been paying attention you'd be asking for Preissing to be traded, not Blake. Why would you deal one of the few blueliners that can contribute in the defensive end? Tie up Blake for next season, trade Preissing for a more defensive adept blueliner, either bring back Stuart or land a quality UFA like Orpik or Jackman & let Harrold skate as your 6th.

When was the last time anyone watched a Kings game? While I do like Blake, it seems to me like he is on the ice every time a goal is scored against the Kings. So if he is the best defensive player the Kings have, maybe that is why the Kings are 28th in goals against.

The Kings need more offensive help. If the opposing team shuts down the Kopitar line, the Kings lose.

Don't dump Crawford. Anschutz should SELL the team to someone who CARES!
