Bouwmeester sends All-Star Game to OT, East wins

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

As a standout defenseman, a game featuring 22 goals in regulation isn't the kind of contest Jay Bouwmeester usually prefers.

As fun as 22 goals may sound, I thought the game was mostly boring until the near the end of the third period and then the overtime. Play was way too slow most of the time, though there were a few really pretty goals scored. Bouwmeester's goal was a really nice wrist shot on a play not uncommon when he's in a Panthers uniform (except that the pass came from none other than Ovechkin). But the absolute best part of the game came afterwards, when the Montreal crowd loudly booed Bettman when he was introduced to give out the MVP award.

best part of the game was the boo - wow - you sound like a real hockey fan. Bet you don't know what off-side is.

bye bye. he's gone. You can tell by everything Bouw says, that he's just waiting to be traded or be a free agent. "money isn't everything", "hockey is a big deal up here"...etc.. he's outta here. good luck.

March 4, 2009 - NHL Trade Deadline:

Sunrise, FL - The Florida Panthers today traded All-Star Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to (fill in real NHL team), for draft picks, prospects, and a 35-yr old journeyman "who can provide leadership".

Panthers owner Alan Cohen was quoted as saying "with these young prospects, and draft picks, we are building a strong foundation for the future. We are not looking for short-term fixes. We want to build our hockey club into a contender and remain there for a long period of time".

Interesting side-note:
This is an exact quote from:
2001
2002
2003
2004
2005 (strike year, the only year this decade the Panthers didn't finish in 12th place)
2006
2007
2008

And the rah-rah's like the cotton candy at the BAC, the Panther patrol,
ise skanks, T-shirt guns, and soon-to-come infant sled races during the 1st intermission.

And there is talk of trading him. Bad move again for the South Florida sports fan.

He should not be traded. We need to break the top 8 and wont without him. If he opts out end of year sobeit, more room in salary cap...

Bouw played great in the All Star game and he plays great for the Panthers. I hope he'll be around a long time. Panthers are heading into the playoffs and Bouw's D and points are one of the reasons.

If you think that was a great game, then you are the one who doesn't know hockey. Play was very slow up until the waning minutes of regulation and then OT when both teams tried to score the winner.

And by the way, I've been to a few of them over the years, including in 1983 when a young Wayne Gretzky played (and his father actually sat in the seat behind me along with the then commissioner John Ziegler). I also attended the game held here in Florida in 2003. And in 1979 I attended the 1979 Challenge Cup (all 3 games) when the All Stars faced the Russian National team in lieu of an All Star game. So please don't tell me about All Star games and try to infer that this year's affair was a great (or even good) game. Yeah, the best part was indeed the Montreal crowd loudly booing Bettman. But hey, maybe they don't know much about the sport either.

Gary Bettman may not be one of the best commisioners for any league. But, if it were not for him, and his desire to expand south and west (along with taking a big Blockbuster and Disney check) there'd be no Anaheim or Florida Panthers

I'd agree that Bettman has done some good things over the years. But geez, it's kind of hard to accept a guy who really doesn't even know the game of hockey. He's a former NBA marketing guy who came to the NHL with no experience in hockey except for having seen a bunch of games (and we're not talking about even dozens). Expansion and the new CBA are his main accomplishments, but marketing and growing the game itself are among his failures.

Good post WaM. Gary Bettman gets a D-minus rating in my books.
I don't know if expansion is an accomplishment, though, as it you phrased it. To accomplish something infers achieving. He has failed, and failed badly.
The all-star game has no meaning whatsoever, and is the most boring event in the NHL calendar. At least the AHL has Canada versus Planet USA, or college football's East-West Shrine bowl. Heck, I enjoy watching MLB deciding who will host the first two games of the World Series. Gary Bettman is the Count from Sesame Street. He's a joke.

We know a lot more than you lol that make 100th years now and our fathers and grand fathers told story about legend who played for montreal. Almost all our kids play hockey over here (not like florida) and men play hockey too (not only watch it). So im sorry, but its true, its wasnt the greatest game but it was a lot more entertainning than the 15 previous one.

Thats right and he moved some teams with a lot of fans on other area such as phoenix where no1 even know what ice look like. Bettman only want to have money in the bank, he think USA is the way he can get that. Maybe hes wrong. Im sure if theres 1 team which came up here, the team wont be in trouble (such as isles, lightning, Coyotes).

Actually you'd be wrong about people not knowing ice or hockey in Phoenix. Phoneix actually has a thriving youth hockey program, and one of the better facilities (Ice Den) in the US. It's one of the more interesting paradoxes in places such as Florida, where there are also thriving youth hockey programs. Keep in mind that a team from Ellenton, Florida (just south of Tampa) won the USA Hockey Nationals Peewee Tier 2 last year and that a team from South Florida also won a USA National title a few years back. The paradox is that it's hard to understand how the youth game continues to grow while the NHL franchises have a hard time growing their own fan bases in these areas.

All I can say is that George W.Bush's father was also a President, but obviously not nearly enough rubbed off on him - which kind of casts some doubt on your "heritage" theory. Sorry, but hockey appreciation isn't as much of a birthright as it used to be. Just take a look at the mix of players in the NHL. It's a world game now.

And I stand by my opinion. It was a slow footed game right up until the very end of regulation and then the OT. And by the way, I also thought the musical entertainment was about as bad as what the Super Bowl has offered in recent years. Where's Janet Jackson when you need her?

Maybe it is more international now, however in Montreal its not the same. You have to live it to understand. If someday you come here and assist to a Habs game, you will see its much more different, and people knows a lot in that. The last 11 years, at the Junior world chalenge, we won gold 10 times. Heres the deal, in canada it is the national sport, people (about at least 60%) play hockey. Even if your youth won chapionship, they still are peewees and at that age there are not even 1 player who will play in NHL.

For the All-Star game, yea there wasnt intensity and win desire until the end. But if you look the crowd, youll realise they had a lot of fun.

Oh and good luck to Cards, cuz the Steelers have much more chances to win. You ll have to break their defense shield but wow its crazy how well they play, with the guy with long hair (walapalou??) is the best.
