I agree with the lack of ingenuity in most team's color schemes. I disagree with your comment about the Wild's green jerseys though. Aside from the fact that they aren't even an option this year, saying they "look like black" is like saying the New York Jets unis, which happen to be conveniently displayed in the ad boxes next to where I'm typing, look like black and white. It's the same shade/hue/color green! True, it's not the bright green of our dearly departed North Stars (a curse on the house of Norm Green), but it likens to the deep, forest-green of the Minnesota wilderness and therefore fits. Maybe other teams choose black because they're tired of seeing red in their financial statements?

I think that the Islanders current blue is too dark and I look forward to seeing the team wearing a bright blue uniform. I actually liked the orange third jersey- mainly because of its in-your-face orangeness- but if the only way we can get that bright blue back for the Islanders is to have it as a third then so be it. I really hope that in another year or two the bright blue becomes the Isles regular uniform.

Contrary to your report, the Pittsburgh franchise colors were black and gold 9 years previous to the Bruins existence. In 1915, the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets wore black and gold and would wear those through 1925 (as the Hornets).
Boston had tried to stop the Penguins from switching to black and gold during their change from blue in the 70's, but due to this fact above, it was decided that the Pittsburgh hockey franchise had the right to because of their earlier history wearing the color scheme.

The Wild do not wear their green sweaters any more, and haven't for two years now. The blackhawks have also not worn their black sweaters in some time. The Coyotes have worn a unique red for the last three seasons, and no black. If you are going to write a column about this stuff, please stay current.

skitch-thanks for posting that as I was going to say something similiar to that and add that I doubt the pens were trying to follow the Bruins. It was more like they wanted to follow the success of the Steelers and Pirates of the 70's and be "part" of the winning ways with the city and fans. Because the pens were horrible in the 70's.
