"At least the Cubs made the playoffs. Remember the playoffs?"

The Isles have made the playoffs 4 of the last 6 years. Can't say the same for others, i.e., Florida, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.

"the middling-to-fair group that prompted The Hockey News to recently rank the Islanders' farm system in the bottom third of the league. "

Fact - Many publications/services gave the Isles high grades in this past year's draft - some amongst the highest in the league.

Johnette, why write this kind of article a week only days before opening night? If the Isles are 13th - 15th in the Eastern Conference in Feb. or March, I can try to understand if this was written at that time. Go get some anti-depressants.

Johnette, If you had been paying attention, the Islanders made it into the playoffs in 06-07. Played against the best team that year.

Last year we were crushed by injuries. Without that, I bet we would have made the playoffs.

Not every team can be the Yankees. If the Islanders make it into the second round of the playoffs this year, I hope you print a copy of this article and eat it.

The NY Rags have one cup in the modern era'.....

Conragulations johnette, you can now expect a call from the howard stern school of broadcasting.. where sensationalistic diatribes filled with sarcasm rule the subject matter.

Actually, the author is basically telling the truth about this once Fabled originaztion. I would like to say that the Ises will once again reach the top of the standings like they did in the 80s, but who would you be kidding with that kind of thinking. Last year I ordered the Center Ice package, only to see the team lose every 2 out of three 3 games they plays. Needless to say, I won't be getting it again this year...

Nice job, I find it amazing that you could actually make the Islanders situation appear even more dire than it is. Instead of asking us if we remember the playoffs, as posters above have astutely pointed out that we have made the playoffs 4 times in this decade, maybe you should have mentioned that it's been 15 years since they actually advanced to the 2nd round...now that would have been really kicking us while we are down. I think that the management of the Islanders and most, if not all fans, would appreciate the hometown paper cease giving potential free agents even more bulletin board material to not come to the Island. Smyth was not the "Sharpest example". He could have played anywhere he wanted as a UFA, and he did just that - and was nothing but a class act about it. I would have wanted to play with Joe Sakic too. But you, Johnette, like most others at Newsday, are a complete hack. Hopefully this is the last time you are allowed to write about the team, or maybe that's your agenda after all?

You call yourself a journalist? What a lousy job you did on this article. Its just repeating things that everyone was already aware of. You get paid for this dribble? Go cover high scholl field hockey and let a REAL journalist use this space. What a hack!!!

Johnette, thanks for this unnecessary article re-hashing the despair of our club over the past x-number of seasons. It's not as if we haven't seen similar artcicles written everywhere reviews of the coming 2008-09 season can be found. It sounds as if writing this article somehow gave you some great perverse pleasure wallowing in our (the islanders fans) predicament. It IS now unfortunate for us that we fell in love with what was, at the one of the most well-managed,(the Torrey days) talent evaluating operations in the business.

My biggest problem with your review is that you seem to insinuate that the islanders and their fans should simply give up and stop trying. If that is the way you teach your children (if you have any) to face adversity I feel sorry for their plight with you as their mother. New islanders management has quite a chalenge ahead, no question, but the only chance for possible success is through commitment to and execution of a plan and it seems that is what Garth Snow is on board to do. You must admit that compared to the prospects of success with Mike Milbury we have a lot to look forward to.
