Flyers: Familiar motto: Flyers will wait 'til next year

Full story: The Morning Call

Down three goals and facing an inspired opponent in a hostile building, the Pittsburgh Penguins easily could've settled for going back home to play Game 7. Instead, Sergei Gonchar and Sidney Crosby helped the Penguins stage a remarkable comeback to advance to the next round.

Biron was plenty good enough to win this series for the Flyers. I don't think he is good enough to win a Stanley Cup though. Two reasons this series went the way it did. Lack of PP production and Jeff Carter was non existent this series. One goal for Carter. Heck Arron Asham and Dan Carcillo had more points than Carter this series. Balanced scoring is a good thing but how are you going to tell me your leading goal scorer and point getter in the regular season only gets 1 goal and no assists all series.

Get rid of Carcillo. He took bad penalties and got baited into that fight which got the Penguins fired up.

Yeah I agree with getting rid of Carcillo and they should get rid of Cote as well. We don't need goons on the team, having a guy like Asham who will drop the gloves when need be and still has an offensive upside is good enough. There is no question the game swung to Pittsburgh after that fight even though Talbot got pummeled. No offensive urgency after that fight, the Flyers packed it in for the night and were thinking game 7 without taking care of business. Truly a disappointing end to a great run.

It's more than just Carter's lack of production and the powerplay going cold...because both teams' power plays were not good. Carter was also getting robbed blind by Fleury the entire series, especially in game 2, when Fleury changed the complexion of the series with his toe save on Carter's shot. If Carter scores on that goal, then we're at least going to a game 7. Hell, if the Flyers scored 2/8 times on the PP in game 4 and Fleury plays a hair worse than he did, the Flyers actually have a chance at wrapping the series up in Pittsburgh for game 5. Now of course one can speculate what might have been and what could have happened, but in the end, the Flyers didn't get it done...even though they seemed poised to take control of the series at different parts of the 6 games.

I agree that you can't blame Biron for this series loss, but I also agree that he's not the guy who'll take the Flyers to the Stanley Cup. What the Flyers need to do is trade for an elite goalie prospect (Jhonas Enroth, Josh Harding, etc...) and acquire a cheap goalie to fill in for a couple years (Craig Anderson maybe?). Then the Flyers need to add a top-flight defenseman to help Timonen out...that would be JayBo. After that the Flyers need to sign some gritty forwards to play on the third line, such as Mark Recchi, Rob Niedermayer, etc...who will bring added leadership and toughness to the team (Rex would also help Richie out cause Mike needs a mentor to help him continue developing as a captain).

Sometimes you have to take a step back before taking a giant step forward, and it seems this might be what's going on. I don't believe last year was a fluke or a sign of overachievement, because the Flyers were that good and had the right mentality to get to the Eastern Conference Finals, upsetting Washington and Montreal. This team however, underachieved and didn't have that same killer instinct that a true championship caliber team has. The Flyers need to become a team that only cares about winning. Their motto should be "Winning is everything" not "Wait till next year."

And that will come too, cause unlike Flyers teams of the past, this Flyers club will be continue to get better as the years go on cause they're still a young team (Richards-24, Carter-24, Lupul-25, Hartnell-27, Coburn-23, Parent-21, Giroux-21). They've got good mid-aged players like Briere-31, Gagne-29, and Timonen-34, but they need more veteran presence for the locker room. Championship teams take time to form, so I don't want to hear people bitching and saying "blow this team up," "Richards is a bad captain," and other bullshit like that.

Do we have Crosby and Malkin-like superstars? No. But we do have the ability to build our defense up to where their sole occupation is to contain Geno and Sid...that's what we need to do. We have Timonen and Coburn, but need JayBo to help us out.

This is the way I look at this team for next year. With the emergence of giroux as the number 3 centre, that leaves briere as the odd man out. On the second line I think Jvr will take lupuls spot. So that leaves the question what could you get on the market for briere, and lupul. What we need is a guy that can be a physical force to play on either side of giroux. We need an elite goalie, and 1 more top 4 defenceman. I think there is potential in Parent, Coburn and Timonen. I think there is value in Jones and carle. I like these two players, they just dont fit into the system that the flyers have.

If I had the choice between 2 superstars or 3 lines that can score in a salery cap era, no question i build for depth. Mark my words soon the Pens will have to make the decision of trading either malkin or crosby. I dont believe we need more of a vetran presance I think we have it with Knuble, Timonen, and Gagne. I like the fact that they dont have a bunch of former champs on their team, that tells me that they should be hungry for the cup.

I dont know whose on the market but we should be targeting a number 1 elite goalie (Turco dallas may be rebuilding.) and Jay Bow. The market for free agents will be somewhat dryer. So there may just be room for a superstar free agent. Homer will get it done. I would think there will be sparks at the draft.

For this team depth and a defense is a huge need! Maybe some nastiness as well.
