I hated Chelios when he was a Hawk, and quickly learned to love him as a Wing. And at my age of 50+, it is great to see a 48 year-kid still getting into the play-off run. Oh. By the way. It is going to be the Wings in FIVE!! GO WINGS!!!

What ever happened to the kids we got for him?

Chicago traded Chris Chelios to the Detroit Red Wings for Anders Eriksson and 1st round selection (Steve McCarthy) in 1999.
I recall Eriksson bounced around quite a bit - I think he's with Calgary now. Not sure about McCarthy. It would certainly seem it was a GREAT trade for Detroit. Go Wings! |

I am usually first in line to bash on the old regime, but really, who would have ever expected Chelios would turn into a real-live Energizer Bunny? Playing hockey at 47? That's astounding. I wish they would have kept him, too, but in this case they traded someone they thought was at the end of his career for prospects. Not exactly the first time that has ever happened.
I say cut the Hawks a little slack on this one. Hopefully he can be invited back into the fold after he retires at age 50 or whenever. I miss his chili. |

Lets face it, the reason Cheli is still playing is that Detroit didn't have to lean on him like Chicago did. Had he continued as a Hawk, he probably would have been done 4 or 5 years ago.
Today, the situation in Chicago is different and it makes coming back a possibility for him. Adding his wisdom and experience to Cambell, Sebrook, and Keith would be a pretty good addition. In Detroit, Cheli helped along a lot of our young defensemen along. I can't see him doing any less if he came back to Chicago. |

I don't think you'll see Chelios headed back to the Windy City. He plays for a team now with depth. ANd CHicago has looked terrible in this series (today was an embarrassment, with Lindstron & Datsyuk out). Why would he return to that?
What's this about the Wing's coach hating him? |

Correction: Meant "Lidstrom".

Sorry, meant "Lidstrom".

The Hawks could take another huge step toward righting past wrongs by bringing Cheli back for one last hurrah. It doesn't even matter if he can play. Give him the one last year that he wants, and let him get the hero's thank-you that Chicago fans will give him. If he happens to do a little mentoring and serving as a good professional example for the youngest team in the NHL at the same time, then so be it.
He has always said that he's coming back to Chicago eventually, and this would be another perfect move for Wirtz, McDonough, Tallon, and co. |
