It's an OK trade with some good upside potential. One of the better moves made by Jacques - which are few and far between.

On another note, I was reminded about the Panthers' new ticket pricing policy while watching Real Sports on HBO - a segment on the newest trend in football and baseball - "Personal Seat Licenses" (PSLs). Seems that many teams are going in this direction, charging a fortune simply for the right to purchase a season ticket. NY Giants season ticket holders have been informed that in order to purchase their same seat in the soon to be completed new Giants Stadium they will need to pay a one time fee for the right to own that seat - which are priced from as low as $1,000 per seat (upper section of upper bowl) to $20,000 (most lower bowl seats). The Yankees will effectively raise the price of their best field level seats from about $81,000 per year to over $800,000! The Dallas Cowboys have PSL prices that go way higher.

Gotta wonder how long it will take for Bettman and some NHL owners to move in this same direction, particularly in some northern cities. Perhaps the smarter move would be to try to get some of those turned off fans to move their money to the NHL and buy season tix for their local teams. Hockey tix might be expensive, but nothing like what baseball and football are becoming.

WAM, the Maple Leafs already have this seat licensing program in place. There was a bit of a scandal earlier this year when some MLSE employees sold fake licenses:

After three 50-plus-point seasons, McCabe had just 23 points (five goals) this past season, missing 22 games because of a broken hand.

He also became a scapegoat for Leafs fans after scoring an own goal in overtime early in the season.

We gave up perhaps a better player, for this guy..
Isn't this like kissing your sister??
Hmmm, interesting idea..Any hot sisters out there??
Nothing has changed, the team looks the same on paper..
Bet Mccabe loves South Florida...

But at his best, McCabe was a better player than Van Ryn was at his best. McCabe has no lingering injury issues and Van Ryn's wrists are still a huge question mark. Besides, a team shouldn't be counting on McCabe to be their shut down guy, as his forte is more about his offense. Toronto was so bad last year that they had to rely on McCabe to do way more than his talents suggest. At worst it is a wash - McCabe for Van Ryn - and at best it gives them a stronger guy at the point on power plays and at other times in the offensive zone. Besides, the Leafs were so underwhelming last season that just about anyone on their team was a good candidate for being the scapegoat. McCabe simply sealed the deal on that label with his own-goal faux pas.

As far as I am concerned this new trend is PSL's is a rip=off. Consider that most of these new arenas and stadiums are being built largely with taxpayer money and that these very same taxpayers are being priced out of the market for tickets to games in a facility that they helped pay for.

A "bargain" is an overstatement. The cost of a family of 4 to attend a game and sit in the lower bowl for a non "premium" game is at least $288 and then add in the cost of food and beverage and you are talking about a $400 night. Don't know many average fans who consider a $400 night out with the family to be a bargain!

Besides, how can the team be "coming together" when they haven't even hit the ice for their first official practice?

This is a good trade.

McCabe>>>Van Ryn.

'Nuff said.

TSN also said yesterday we'd be getting a bonus in the deal...a draft pick.

We'll see, but if we get McCabe, I REALLY LIKE the D core heading into next year...now about that offense...

Another clown that thinks only a "lower bowl" seat is viable.

Cory Stillman and Brian McCabe, yeah the Panthers are getting younger.

I agree, and McCabe helps the Panthers a lot on offense. A good move by JM.

Hands down that the Panthers get the better deal.
McCabe will rebound and produce another 45-50 point season and will help the PP as much as Olli did last few years. McCabe has a great shot from the point and with someone planting themselves in front of the goalie (which is what Leafs lacked all these years while on the PP) goals will come frequently on the PP...
In the past 6 NHL seasons McCabe has scored over 15 goals 4 times and 53 pts or more 3 straight seasons including 68 pts in the 05-06 season.
Partner McCabe with a defensive D-man and don't count on him being the shut down guy. Being out of the media spotlight of Toronto will help McCabe regain his past form. Even at 33 he should still produce for the next two or three seasons until his contract runs out.
It's either love/hate the guy... Panthers fans will love his hard hits, workhorse ability to play 30/35 minutes a game and scoring stats but will dread his untimely penalties, mental errors and at times he handles the puck in his own zone as if it's a grenade...
McCabe I think may even have one of his best seasons ever here, he could score 10-15 PP goals and total 60+ pts with this young Panthers team...

I like this trade. We got some sorely needed offensive power. Combine that with our new and improved defense and our two good-to-go goalies and things are looking up. We still need more offense, but I think our defense will be just awesome. GM Martin is doing fine so far. Let's see what's next.

I think that the 2010 4th Rd pick thrown was for a couple of reasons.

Possibly part of last year's Kilger deal that Panthers gave away a pick for nothing basically and or combined that McCabe was told he wasn't coming back because the Leafs tried to trade him last season and he refused to waive his no trade clause so... fast forward several months later the Leafs are publicly saying he's not good enough for us and we want to get rid of you.

GM Martin figured he not only gets McCabe (50-60 pt potential) a pick and gets salary cap relief by letting go a 29 yr old D man with a possible wonky wrist. In the Leafs forums many thought Bouwmeester and/or Booth would be included in some kind of mega package deal... in the end Martin did the smart thing and pulled off a very nice deal for the Panthers. Toronto's hands were tied, they had to let him go at this price...
