Don't re-invent the wheel Garth just pick Taveras it is a no brainer. We have enough other picks to play with. If we don't pick Taveras or he winds up a maple leaf I am officialy done with the Islanders who I've been watching for 30 plus years. That will be the final straw.

my father has been an Islanders fan since day 1, and me and him have bonded because of the islanders. But we like many others are sick and tired of the B.S the Isles have been pulling the last several years. And if they don't draft tavares and or do something really stupid (which has become a common theme for the isles on draft day) we are done cheering for this team. Enough is enough we want progress, and a sign of hope. And that sign of hope is John Tavares.

Herrmann: Neil Smith had nothing to do with scouting and picking Kyle Okposo, that was Jankowski. Chris Botta has explained that fact many times. Here is just one example:

(Chris Botta, comment 43) admin on Mar 13th, 2009 15:56:06 said: Neil Smith was the NYI GM for just a brief time before the draft. He was not an amateur scout for whatever franchise he was “consulting” for during the ‘05-06 hockey season. The notion that Neil regularly scouted Okposo, or anyone else the Islanders drafted in 2006, is fictional. Asst GM Ryan Jankowski, who managed the scouting staff at the 2006 draft, remains in that role…CB

Snow better not trade the no. 1 get Taveres we havent had a snipper in forever. There hard to find and would cost you a fortune in free agency. I still think Snow should trade with Tampa and grab the second pick as well and take Hedman no. 2. Our rebuilding would be done with youth and we can add the other players we need in free agency. We can with the draft picks we've stockpiled get the second pick from Tampa as well and even if needed add a player to a package that would get that done. Don't screw this up Garth if you can grab both Taveres and Hedman you may be leading the parade in a couple of years and your name could be on the next architect banner hanging from hopefully our new lighthouse. If you screw this up knowing how angry some of the desperate Islanders fans are about finally seeing a winner you could be on a different lighthouse.

I don't think I've ever read an article with so many quotes and not having any of them attributed to anyone. Who's to say that these quotes were not just made up fiction?

If they use the pick it better be J. Taveras. Otherwise they better pull off a trade that resembles Quebec/Colorado with the Flyers and Lindros. 5 first round picks built that team to win 3 cups over the span of 10 seasons following the trade! It does require "more time", but it is the best possible option.

The former NHLer who said the isles should draft Hedman was Butch Goring. He was of the opinion that defense wins championships, and that the isles already had some good young talent up front. You can make a case either way, but the bottom line is that the islanders havent had an elite sniper/50 goal scorer since ziggy palffy. Tavares broke Gretzkys OHL record in points........im pretty sure he fits into that category.

If the Islanders don't pick Tavares and he turns out to be another Crosby, I'll never go to another Islander game again. I wouldn't care if they move to Mars. No place could be far enough as far as I'm concerned. I would rather they pick Tavares and he turn out to be just a 30 goal scorer than pass on him.

If he turns out to be all everyone says, it will be a pick that saves the franchise as far as I'm concerned. Take it to the bank!

This is an honest question (not an argument):
Have you read or seen anything that can truly draw comparisons to Crosby or are you just invoking the name because everyone is talking up Tavares these days?
I've certainly read great things about him but so far I have not seen anything that would suggest it is fair to compare him to Crosby.

Please don't outsmart yourself Garth (Isles GM's have turned that into an art form); take Tavares. If you take him and he's a bust I can live with that. If you don't take him and he becomes a Hart...then I don't forgive. Sometimes the obvious choice is the best choice. One exception...if Tampa wants to give you Vinny and the 2nd pick...that'd be ok.

I understand that part but the scouts have not compared him to Gretzky. He's playing with and against different players in a different era. Specifically, something common to Gretzky, Lemieux, LaFontaine(for that matter), Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Heatley, and Kovalchuk (among others) is that they all have/had superior skating skills. Every scouting report that I have read has always said that Tavares' skating is average. In other players there has been a sharp decline in production from minors to NHL when the skating ability wasn't up to par.

So... I repeat the question... Is there actually a legitimate reason to compare Tavares to Crosby?
