Full story: Newsday

Seeing Bill Guerin skate on the fourth line in practice during the first week of training camp was reminiscent of Alexei Yashin 's tenure as captain of the Islanders.

Amazing about the above voting....Kyle is the player to watch over their first round pick Baily? Wow, its great to see how this draft pick proves to be such a waste! The moves the Islanders have made this year are clearly disturbing! As a fan for decades...I cannot wait to miss the home opener this year in favor of watching how a proven team has been built-Washington! Honestly the 96-97 NYI team had a better selection of names...including a prolific goal scorer (Palffy)....can someone tell me our prolific goal scorer this year or even last year? Or since there is a youth movement this season, where is our resident tough guy to protect this talent? Please dont drop Witts name or even Suttons! Finally, remember The Hockey News has given a team grade report of D and 15th in the East! But remember DP will prove his elite status and keep us in all the games.....right!!!!!

I don't care what happens this season so long as they stick to the course that they have chosen.(oh yeah & win the head to head with the Rangers of course!) After the whole mess of firing Nolan my patience is wearing thin with management.

What is Guerin talking about? He was the biggest half-ass on the team last year. What a joke. After last year's performance, you earned nothing but a bad reputation. Get off the PP and retire you old terd. We're all Boxes!

Certainly no prolific goal scorers this year. There are a couple of enforcers trying out - to be used on an as needed basis. As long as the kids work hard and compete, I'll be happy. At least Redden looks like garbage so far!

Turnpike Lunatic- I am Disappointed to see your comments. THN has predicted the Isles last and givenus subpar ratings for the last 15 years - where have you been. We dont get respect - similair to the Giants and look what they did. Your comemnts about Washington are disturbing from a "lifelong isles fan." I dont care if we lose 80+ games...I will watch everyone and when this does turn around the taste of victory will be that much better. Hopefully a fair weather fan like you wont be the one sipping it with me. Go root for the Rags you dweeb.

I mean 2 years we were picked to be the worst team in the East and the League and we made the playoffs over Montreal, Boston and Toronto, so what the Hockey News or other publications say don't really matter.

If you want positive stats, the Isles top 6 D were ranked as a unit as the #7 D corps in the league. That's pretty good.

It's all about play on the ice. Who knows what will happend between now and January or the end of the season? If we don't find out now, every one would complain that we traded away or squashed more young talent.

Would I like a stud scorer? Sure who doesn't, but picking up a Marian Hossa (at a ridiculous amount) or any of the other free agents wasn't going to turn the team in a SC contender.

This team reminds me of the Carolina Hurricanes from a few years ago, a couple of vets (Brind'Amour, Wesley) and a bunch of young guys (who outside of Staal and a hockey nut like me) no one ever heard of and some reliable filler players.

They won the SE and made a deep run and won the Cup, not saying the Isles are there, but at some point you have to let the youth play, if it works great, if it doesn't people will continue to complain!

I'm an Islander though! GO ISLES GO!!

Your going to compare the Islanders to the Giants...you should keep walking to find the smoking sections outside the coliseum and keep smoking that weed! You are so clueless on this team...the Giants had and continue to have star-status names that fans and non-fans recognized. Were are our big time names? Your right we have none! I'm just sick and tired of this team/owner not facing up to the truth...we have been struggling with attracting caliber players here and will continue...so go the easy route "we are rebuilding with youth"...we have heard that for years now! The stupidity this team/owners pulled with firings, draft picks, trades, and free agents was honestly the WORST of all time. To be honest the last glimmer of hope this team had was 01-02 should I back you up with the players we had...and why we secured the playoff spot that year...or do want to go through the same math formulas each season to get to the #8 spot. Do you want to ask yourself why this team is built around DP? Plaes come up with one good answer on his pathetic 15 year albatross contract! The bottom line is I just want to see a winning product on ice...and honestly you can sip your kool-aid with one of your other ddickhead friends...as far as the Rangers comment...they will be the last team on Earth i would even follow....come up with something a little bit more original, my fair weather asshhole!

Jim Johnson,
Appreciate your hockey knowledge but please show me who gave us #7 on the D? Also, the playoffs that was all by math just to get to the 8th seed and be wiped out. 8th seed and 1st round elimination is just not good enough for me....and lets not forget who got us that last playoff spot Dubie! Who has been terminated thanks to Wang/Snow & DP!!! as far as attracting Hossa here it will never happen with a star...we were lucky to get Yashin but we had to bail him out from a previous mess. Let me refresh your memory Ryan Smyth had no interest in staying here and took less money to go to Colorado...I think that is an insight about the NYI! perhaps if Filatov was picked it could have put us on the map again, even if it was a bust the sports coverage between Russia, Canada, and the states would have shined some positive light on this team finally!

As for the voting, I think that not too many fans (including myself) think that Bailey will start with the big club.As far as a "tough guy", yes they do need someone there. Right now all I see is Sim, or those others you mentioned, possibly a wild card up from Bridgeport, who knows? The Isles biggest problem has been, and continues to be, scoring. Our only hope is that the kids step it up or our Vets catch a 2nd or a 3rd wind and can put up some numbers. If Gordon can keep DP in the net he may play more consistently and maybe even last a full season. I can't give up on these guys though. Call me what you will but I think win or lose it's gonna be an exciting season. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Hey tough talker....
What do you know about Filatov? He scored goals for Russia that's it...who set him up for all of those goals and has the knack of putting a bunch in himself? Kirill Petrov!!!Our third round pick from Russia. He played on the same team as Filatov and was the sole reason Filatov looked as good as he did. Hockey folks have stated that the Isles made an excellent choice by selecting him. Some have even said that he is better than Filatov.

We need scoring, we need scoring...we get it but it's not happening. We aren't going to get the top talent. Regardless of what GM has been here. We never get a top scorer. Wow Palffy scored...was a "top guy." Um not really. Where'd we get with him? A cup? Nope didn't happen. Why does everyone go to Detroit, who should be absolutely embarrassed that their fans didn't fill up the their arena during a Stanley Cup finals!, we because they won a cup. Until we do that and we have to do it without top popular named players...no one will come here. There are no easy answers here and it's frustrating but GET OVER IT! Come out and support them team! It takes a bigger man to do that as opposed to what you plan to do proving you are a LUNATIC!

Turnpike Luny: some facts to go with you negative drivel...

Okposo is older than Bailey, common sense says that OKO is the guy to watch, while Bailey SHOULD go back to his junior team.

Washington had the good fortune to be last in the league, so they got OVIE, the last time the isles did what wash did and blow up the team to get a 1st overall pick, dweebs like you would be screaming from the tree tops.

As for Filatov, If you, or anybody else for that matter really believes that having one prolific goal scorer means you will go all the way, see last years BOLTS, Vinny & St Louis and still last place?? Or Jagrs Rags?? Yeah you are so right in thinking that one 5 overall pick will bring the team to the top.

As for a fighter, YouTube up Sugar Sudgen, only the best pure fighter the AHL has ever seen, and he can play, signed for two years...

As for the Hockey News, in rankings some one always has to be at hte bottom, and the ISLES are a high percentage pick to not win hte cup, so it is safe writing for the mag. If you look in that same issue there is a stat for most games won by a goalie in the last three years, DP ranked 10, not bad for a wandering headcase? No?
Gutty, was right you are a closet Rags fan, I bet you are wearing you Winnipeg Jets Pajamas/Liberty 3rd Jersey with MESS on the back right now.

TL-You can't have it both ways? Either The Hockey News has us 15th and that shows we are last place or when they have us 15th 2 years ago and the Isles make the playoffs it was all Math and not the fact THN was wrong!

Doesn't matter how they made it in, the fact is they were in, there wasn't a concocted formula, they earned there way in over Boston, Toronto, Montreal.

The point Jim Johnson was trying to make is lets wait and see. Who knows how good or bad they will be, on paper they aren't looking like a Stanley Cup contender, but this isn't fantasy hockey, they actually play the games on the ice so who knows. I for one as an Isles fan and a hockey fan are going to be there and hope like I do every year.

No Islander fan is happy losing in the 1st Round of the Playoffs, but with as bad things have been, playoff births are at least good things.

And I too saw the Isles D ranked 7th, I want to say TSN or CBC or Toronto Globe and Mail something like that, but I did see it.

Jim you are one scary individual with some desperate views on the future! Firstly, your lack of composing a posting, is lets say on a high school drop-out level. You are that guy, who thinks every move this organization makes is the right one. Now if you really looked at who is running this and how they handle every crisis....its always someone else to blame. I really DO NOT want to go down the list again....but honestly this team F-ed up again with picks, free agents and firings. You are kidding about the DP stat right? I guess if you let someone play that many games through the season his wins wil be high...right d-head! But lets look at his save % and gaa average....pretty sshitty right! As far as the one prolific goal scorer...if we had one maybe just maybe we can attract other players to come here and maybe others will step it up! Finally, I will not only bury you on Islander stats and history, but also with the rest of the league also! So have fun wearing your DP jersey this season, or your Bailey jersey and cheer for you 'youth movement", because honestly I gave up on anything this team has done after the 02 season! A Ranger fan...please dont make me laugh...never will happen, maybe your the clost fan! have a good day Dicckhead!

I agree, can't understand the hostility to your post. I had no idea Naslund was even available until the Rangers signed him -- for the same money Snow signed Comrie. What a joke. Guaranteed: Naslund will get twice as many goals, twice as many points as Comrie. There is not one go-to guy on this team. Not one. Yes, you need balanced scoring to win a title, but you need a go-to guy to win one-goal games, and the Isles don't have it, and Snow hasn't done it. Garbage. Long long long season, and I predict a record amount of shutouts (against) for the Isles.
