Joe Sakic retiring after 20 NHL seasons

Joe Sakic , the Colorado Avalanche 's longtime captain who led the team to two Stanley Cup titles, will retire Thursday and end his 20-year NHL career, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

Thanks for all the great memories Joe. A true Hockey Legend. Saw my first Islanders game against a young Joe Sakic and the Quebec Nordiques on January 2nd, 1992.

Great career, but I'll always view him as a guy the Isles passed over in 1987 because they just had to have Dean Chynoweth. John Pickett was cutting costs and pocketing the Cablevision money. The scouting was being run out of the head scout's basement. It was the beginning of a series of terrible draft picks, and the end of a dynasty.

I remember back in early '90s he was a restricted free agent; the Rangers offered him a contract but Colorado, wisely, met it. I would've loved him as a Ranger, but because hockey has a cap, Colorado could afford to keep one of their own.

Baseball should do the same so teams like Pitt, SD, KC, Mil. etc can hold on to their own instead of being raped by the Skankees, Muts, Sox.
