I am a total novice. Can someone advise me on the best way to clean old rusty and soiled cars and engines. I have found some in the attic and want to get them in shape. I need specific product names or ingredients it is OK to use so as not to damage paint, etc. Rust removal, general grime. Thanks.

If tbey are plastic cars, I would wash them in warm dish soap like you would do dishes. I am not sure about metal ones. In the past I have used a really small flat head screw driver to clean the built up gunk on the wheels of the cars.
After cleaning them I would suggest making sure they are the right weight and the wheels and couplers are in guage. These are two sources of problems and frustration for novices.
A visit to a local model railroad shop or club would gain some good knowledge on your specific brand of cars.
