A new twist to an intriguing family history -

The American experience is both broad and deep. Part of its promise is that each individual is to be judged in therms of his/her own actions, not on anything arising from the conditions ofr his/her birth. I would add that an individual should be judged (if at all) in the context of his or her own time, and the beliefs of the society at that time.

I had relatives on both sides of the War of the Rebellion. In fact, some of them were across the battle lines from each other at the Battle of Perryville (KY). I am most proud of those who fought for the Union. I believe they sacrificed enough for our family to pay any reparations for what we now deem the evil of slavery. Yet I am grudgingly proud of those who fought and sacrificed on the other side for what they were taught was right. Even though now we see how wrong they were.

Our children must be carefully taught. But be careful what you teach them!

What difference does it make whether or not Obama' forebearers were slaves. Who cares?
May the best person for the job win this presedential election.

So what is the purpose of this article? Barack Obama didn't own slaves? I'm pretty George Bush, Dick Cheney, Fred Thompson, Hilary Clinton, and Rudy Guliani family probably all have ties to slavery. I thought we were moving forward not going backwards.This article is just another divisive tactic to keep minorities from voting for the Senator.

All men are created equal whether any other majority member wants to acknowledge it or not.Let's learn from our pass and not cause racial confusion.

Oh for the love of Mike, who cares if his too many greats owned slaves. My family on my mothers side, was an old Maryland family. They lived in Owensville, and strange to say, had (gasp) the last name of Owens. I can go to G-burg in Pa, and see where they killed each other. One for the north, the other the south. Yes,some of them owned slaves. It was wrong!
I want to know Mr. Obama's view on the war in the Middle East, North Korea, Property Taxes, Child Porno and a score of other things. Juvie records are sealed, So should the record of too many greats. I do not like red herrings, and that is what this smacks of, a red herring.

All of us for the most part, unless we got here after the emancipation proclamation are relations to either a slave or an owner. My family itself can trace back to at least three owners and several slaves and that means what in the scheme of things? He can't be trusted to be president, and Bush is? He isn't experenced enough, and Bush is? He's not leadership material, and Bush is? He hasn't been tested militarily and Bush has? and all the other bits of nit picking that will go on because obama is a product of something he had no control over., His distant past and so are we all.

Maybe they should check if Obama's forebears on the East African side also had slaves? I have a similar background to Obama's, but from West Africa. My grand father had slaves as late as in the early 1900s. USA is not the only country to have slaves, you know. In fact, the black slaves of the Americas were in part sold by Africans like my ancestors.

SO WHAT!!! Is there any US citizen alive today who has either been a slave or owned slaves? There are some things that I don't like about Mr. Obama, but I base my opinions on HIS words and actions, not those of his however-far-back ancestors. None of us has any control over which particular family we're born into. This is not news, just an attempt to divert attention from important issues and positions of all of the candidates.
