Fine article, Matt. Thank you for your support and getting the word out.

Rockhound is one of the few things Deming really has going for it. As someone who has spent a considerable amount of time in Deming over the past 5-6 years, I have come to understand the importance of Rockhound for tourism and it's good that people can continue to look for treasures and take them home.
Now if Deming can attract some more restaurants, restore downtown and clean things up, there may be hope for what is considered a "dirty rest stop" between Las Cruces and Silver City.

What grand news, rock collecting saved by public comments and common sense.

This article is posted on LA-ROCKS, the oldest online group devoted to rockhounding. So, over 1,000 members will read about this important victory. Thank you to the town of Deming and all the others who gave input to keep this park open for the purpose it was founded.
In California, we are seeing continual closing of areas historically used for hobbyists and families to collect rocks. Most recently, the "Ant Hill" area near Bakersfield where sharks teeth and other marine fossils are found was approved for a housing development.
I hope to make my first visit to Deming sometime later this year!
