I recently spent time in Choluteca, Marcovia and Los LLanitos with a family from the area who survived Hurricane Mitch. Most of them were able to move into the concrete block houses built by aid organizations.
I saw the seafood farms and the melon fields. The family told me the "meloneros" (melon pickers) earn about $1.50 to $2.00 a day. Most people from the colonia where the family lives would share the sentiments of Gomez, because like all people, they want a better life and there is no way to progress. They can't afford to send their children to obtain a higher education, they can't save up to invest in businesses or land purchase, they can only squeak by. All jobs in the area pay very low for this class of people. They cannot afford to eat at the fast food places. How sad that outside investors want to come in and take advantage without lifting up the local people. And how sad the Honduran government is allowing this.
