Tuskegee airman readies for honor

Congratulations to Mr. Palmer and the remaining survivors. My son and I got to meet Tuskegee Airmen at Black Expo two years ago. They were a delight and took great pleasure in telling the kids about their work. We also got our Tuskegee Airmen dolls signed!!! Another great reason to visit the Smithsonian. Maybe the smaller copy will be on display somewhere here in Indy in the future.

I have met Mr. Palmer and know his son.

A quiet, unassuming man, you would never suspect his outstanding and heroic contribution to America.

Congratulations. Better late than never. It's a shame that several of the Airman from Indianapolis are no longer around to receive this hornor( Rayfield Anderson, Donald Anderson and Dr. John H. Driver DDS). Growing up in Indianapolis i did not have to look to far to learn or see Black History, they were Black History. Along with Raymond "Turk" Stephens for Pearl Harbor. This is the kind of history that our kids need today.

From one vet to another, Congratulations to you and the rest of you airmen. You all did a great service. You guys are really outstanding people. Thank You for what you did to make so many other servicemen safe to return and fight again.

My uncle was a flight engineer on a B-17 in Europe and was escorted more than once by the Tuskegee Airmen. Thanks to them and others he returned home and gave me three cousins. Thanks to you and all of the greatest generation..

It's sad that so many of our nations older veterans are passing away and taking their personal histories with them and not passing them on to future generations.

The mission the Tuskegee Airmen were given, and successfully completed, was nothing less than amazing...it's one of the greatest stories ever told! We as American citizens owe them a debt of gratitude that we can never repay. Thank You to Mr. Palmer and ALL of the Tuskegee Airmen. You were and are the greatest.

I grew up as a friend of Mr. Palmer's grandchildren and was "raised" by his family and heard stories about the Tuskegee Airmen while growing up. I am proud of the Tuskegee Airmen and all they accomplished. Mr. Palmer, congratulations and well done, your reward is long overdue well worth the wait.

I know Mr. Palmer and he is a very proud man and I am proud of him for what he and the airmen did for this country.And is time they get what they have waited so long to get.

I would like to include Mr. Arthur L. Carter, Sr. as one of those men who will be receiving this award. He is also a Hoosier. I liked the article and congratulate Mr. Palmer, but there are few more that could have been included in here.

The above statement is a blatant lie:

Over the five days, 25 bombers were shot down, though most were lost on missions where the number of bombers exceeded the number of fighters, he said.

"I don't think it (their reputation) will be diminished at all because of the achievements that they accomplished -- they don't really need that statement:'Never lost a bomber'," he said, adding: "No other group could have done a better job."

Yeah Right!

Wow, leave it to some backwoods Hoosier to post something like this! It's people like you that make this award SO fitting. They were treated like CRAP by this country and still fought and died for this country!! Whether they lost a plane that they escorted or not is irrelevant at this point. Yes, they do deserve the recognition!

The Tuskegee Airmen also trained in Columbus and Seymour. In fact, racial discrimination came to an end primarily because of their "sit-in" at Freeman Field, Seymour, IN. President Truman signed the proclamation just a few days following the protest.

What type of fighter aircraft did you fly in WW2 ? Were you on Pork Chop Hill in Korea ? What branch of service were you in during Vietnam ? Are you allowed in the VA hospitals for disabled American Veterans ? You seem to be such an expert.

I don't quite follow what you are trying to say here. Are you attempting to hold up the couragous actions of a Medal of Honor winner to denigrate and downplay the actions of others?

Your logic in connecting these events should be interesting if somewhat difficult to follow...
