I hope you get a good Dr. I just came from the clinic--sick with all the W.N. symptoms complete with a three-day itchy rash & my Dr. said,"We don't even test for West Nile--there's nothing we can do for it, anyway. See how the weekend goes. Put some rubbing alcohol on the rash to ease itching & dry them up." The same thing happened to me twice before--seven years ago & again four years ago, which disabled me. This disease is under-tested by docors, therefore under-reported to the CDC. This problem is bigger than anyone knows. My rashes these three times with all of the extreme flu-like symptoms are small fluid-filled blister rash bumps that itch like crazy on my leg and arms--not the abdomen like the CDC claims. I read of a California survivor who had the rash from head to toe. Reporters need to start asking hard, specific questions & going undercover to clinics about this. If doctors don't run a test for West Nile, then it won't be reported to the CDC, which then won't end up in the news to warn the public. This is WRONG.

Wow...that looks like the rash I have that no one knows what it is...I have been treated for allergies, folliculitus and scabies...and still it spreads. I am having muscle spasms, headaches and just don't feel good.
I am practically living in Aveeno baths while we wait on test results on WNV and other things.

Thank you all for sharing your stories. It is good to get information out there, it helps others. At the risk of sounding like a "flower child" may I suggest switching some of your diet to organic? I have no proof, but chemicals, peticides, hormones and all the other fake "stuff" that is in our food may aggrivate your symptoms and not allow your body to heal itself. I am not any kind of expert, I just see what the government allows people to put in/on our food supply. It worrys me.

Good news for me...not WNV...But a severe case of Pityriasis Rosea. So severe that my symptoms were the worse case the dermatologist had ever seen. So two md's and two mis-diagnosis.
My advice to everyone is seek a dermatologist! Its worth it!
Blessings to all.

I am so glad I found this website. I was diagnosed with WMN in August '06. It started with a rash, mine never itched, it was almost a nerve like rash. I couldn't stand anything to touch me. It started as shingles would, and that was my first diagnosis. Then when it spread all over I was told it was a "swimmer's itch" (I do live on the California Delta and had been in the water alot the weekend before) When the fever hit, that is when I went to emergency. They would not test me for WNV. I had to go to my primary. He did test, it came back positive, then the county retesed me and re-confirmed. Once the fever, headache, and the disorenitation started, the rash went away. I have never been so disappointed in our medical industry in my life. My primary had no idea what to do with me. In fact when he called to tell me I was positive, he actually congratulated me because I was the person he had know to contract it. That makes you feel special. There was no followed up for two weeks. I ran 104 to 104.4 fever for those two weeks, and could only get it to drop to 102 in the mornings. I was taking 2 extra strength tylenol every four hours religiously that whole time. When he did call me to see how I was doing (two weeks later) I told him what I was taking, and he said I was going to put my liver into shock, to start taking asprin. So I did, then I read that you should not take asprin with a fever, something about Reyes Syndrome. I am lucky that I am a healthy person, cause other wise I would have been a statisic. No one can answer my questions, so I feel like I am just shooting in the dark. I have recovered well, I do still get tired from time to time, but there is so much stuff I don't think anyone knows about this virus. It is scarry, and I hope that education continues...especially for those that have had it and what to expect or not to expect. Good luck to everyone.

Doctors say that once you've had west nile, you're immune. I had it three years ago in August. I was recently outdoors and ended up with 20+ bites even with repellant.... I now have a bruise looking rash around one of them and an itchy rash in areas all around my body. I have all of the same symptoms as I had before... I think you can get it again. Going to see my doctor today to discuss.

My husband (69 yrs)was diagnosed by our doctor with WNV (our doctor has been great, but the health dept in our county after 2 re-tests says it's not clear!) He was first tested 2 weeks after suspected bite. My husband had 2 nasty looking mosquito bites on his neck in September '07. Woke up 5 days later with a fever of 104 and other flu-like symptoms. He is diabetic and a heart patient so he has challenging health issues already. Never experienced headaches but has had fever, disorientation, tremors, extreme weakness, loss of balance, aching - and then Thrush (a bad rash in his mouth that kept him from eating). First month was bad, then he began to improve - and seems to continue improving enough so he can function again, i.e. drive, take care of finances, other daily chores. If he has a good day, he then has 3 or 4 bad days. It has been over 2 months now and he keeps having reoccurences. This morning it was disorientation and chills. We are both depressed off and on - especially when we think he is getting better and then has some setback and we wonder if it is starting over again. It's comforting to know that others are experiencing similar things and have similar questions. This disease seems to affect everyone differently. God bless all of you and thanks for writing of your experiences! It means a lot

Linda - if your husband is having a hard time eating - he can try to take a spoonful of hershey's chocolate syrup. It coats the mouth so he can eat without his mouth being irritated. It works realy well for people who are going through chemo treatment and have sores in their mouth. Try it!
I was diagnosed with WNV just about a month ago. My rash is horrible and itchy and I've had it since October...first thought it was chicken pox, scabies, etc. Lucky for me - I have a wonderful family doc. Take lots of vitamins - it helps a lot with the fatigue.

I have all these symptoms...what is the test I should ask for, as I have read both that there is and is not a test for WNV? My rash is miserable. Thanks!

about 3 weeks or so ago, i was bitten on the knee twice by mosquitoes. About a week or so later, i developed a rash on my legs and arms that have a small round appearance with a fluid filled blister in the center. some was larger, some smaller. I began feeling severely fatigued and went to the ER thinking i may have shingles. Only to get sent away by ER dr who did NO blood work and said i needed to go to a dermatologist and that it was probably allergies.
a few days later, rash was getting worse and i went to my GP. she said it was probably a viral infection and told me to apply aveeno to the rash and take antibiotics. If it didn't get better, i was to call back and have her call me in some predisone...which did NOT work either.
The next week, my flu like symptoms became worse as the rash seemed to be calming down....yet still having various spots on my legs and arm's appear as the days go on. I have an appt tomorrow with my GP and i am praying she won't laugh at me when i suggest testing for the WNV. Does anyone else seem to experience this crazy like rash?
thanks

In my city, the newspapers report that WNV has been found, but they do not report in which section of the city it has been found, which makes everybody nervous

Oh my - I am not alone - been to 2 doctors, one emergency room trip - now dealing with allergist. None of them have thought of WNV. This started last Sept (09) and now mid Feb (10) still fighting a nasty rash. What is the cure?
