We can see that no stimulus funds are allocated to two of the strongest research groups for which UC Davis is known the world over: Agronomy and Veterinary medicine. Due to lack of funding for Agronomy cutting edge research like genetic engineering in crops has passed on to the private sector. For example, Monsanto has the monopoly on certain genetically modified crop seeds such as cotton and soya beans. Now genetically modified eggplants are being promoted in India. Placards showing crop varieties planted by farmers in Yolo county show seeds purchased from private seed companies. There are hardly any UCD released varieties among them. The universities have been forced to abdicate their leading research positions in favor of private sector whose driving force is pure profit and maintaining business clout. I am not opposed to private enterprise but keep your universities strong too so that benefits of cutting edge research are accessible to the poor in developing countries also.
