There have been a lot of mean posts regarding Linda the past few days. It is time to let some of this mean spiritedness drop by the wayside. There is no point in arguing why she died. No one is going to change their mind on that. Try to remember that there was a real person at the other end of the posts. Linda got out of line quite a few times as did many of us on the other side. For me it got to the point that I rarely posted anymore. Linda is gone now, but there are still others out there and if both sides want to spend the time belittling each other they can do that. Out of respect for her family and friends, I hope posters here will have enough decency left to allow her family to remember her as they saw her.

Just hoping some people will do the right thing,

Listening to the family reminiscing about Linda, they all knew her position on the indoor smoking ban.

They smiled and laughed fondly as they reflected on this common topic.

Her oldest son, I'm trying to remember how he said it... but he basically said that he wouldn't have been able to handle all of the rough things that were said in the threads like his mom did.

Everybody looked up to Linda for her stalwart and unfailing stance on what she believed.

As noted elsewhere, the forum is probably not recommended reading for family and close friends. As much as any wish to say that people were cruel to Linda here, Linda was equally cruel to others. She often clogged the forum with multiple copy/pastes of bogus and/or irrelevant information from sources that lacked any semblance of credibility. I found it useful that she had registered and tended to have an identifiable icon show up alongside each of her posts, because that made it easier for me to skip over them while going through the pages after pages of prattle looking for something that might actually say something.

Her death does not make her admirable or exculpate her for her forum persona. It simply makes her gone.

It is a loss for her family and friends. I am sorry for them and would not wish more grief on them.

There is no real way to spin her forum presence into anything other than the bitter, abusive, seldom-rational thing it was. The forum is better left alone for those who want to remember the loving family member or friend.

She fought hard for something that she, and many, firmly believe is right- and she did it honestly.

QUESTION- Are you, Hugh Jass and/or "TruthBeTold" Payed Posters?
Please do not try to dodge the question by any form of 'spin', or,'dance' on the matter... No false rage please. No attempting to get out of the question by asking another question. Please. Thank you. Also, hopefully no "TruthBeTold" responding with his usual viciousness, only to never answer a simple question, then try to end the matter with his equally usual "NEXT!". I think in readers minds, it doesn't work. For once, please simply answer this question:

Yes, or, No... Are you and/or "TruthBeTold" Payed Posters?

"False rage"? You flatter yourself that you have something that hits so hard that it justifies "rage"?
Boredom, disgust, weariness, yes. No need to fake any of those.

Are you making an offer? There is no way for one of us to answer your ridiculous question as it is posed. Idiot.

Please put aside your inclination to resort to insults. I already asked no 'spin' or 'dance'. As has been in the past, this isn't a satisfactory answer. Most anyone from a mere child and through the rest of their life could understand this simple question and give one of the two simple, obvious answers- just as long as the child, or anyone, was an honest.

Also, you could just speak for yourself- he ("TruthBeTold") has been dodging this question for a long time.

Not to spend my morning correcting you, but, certainly there is a way: it's a simple "Yes",or, "No". Now, are you, Hugh Jass - and/or "TruthBeTold" Payed Posters?

I doubt either of them would fess up to unreported income as it could have adverse tax conesquences, and lower or eliminate their food stamp allowances and other state aid.

I think we as Linda's friends would do better to stop posting at all on these threads.
If they have no one to insult they will have no fun here.
In honor of Linda this will be my last comment on this subject.

I agree with you. True-to-form as they are, they ALWAYS stick their proverbial noses where they are neither warranted nor welcome.

It's how the bans were born, afterall :-).

Rest in eternal peace, Linda.

Your question is ridiculous.
You are insulting me by asking.
Your question was not about just myself. You insult me by demanding an answer I cannot give without spinning your question to where I can pretend that it IS about just me, and then demanding that I not attach spin.
Your question has been answered long since. You insult me by pretending that it has been somehow dodged and that I may have some reason for dodging it.
I did my best to put aside my tendency to meet insults in kind, but your insistence on compounding it outlasted me. You are acting like a pompous ridiculous ass, and can't blame others if you are responded to accordingly.
Good For You.

No, the bans were born because smokers continually filled everyone else's nose with toxic effluvia that was neither warranted nor welcome.

Information that has come out the last few days may explain some of the problems over the months. Brain tumors could affect the way a person thinks, let alone expresses herself. It is doubtful that I encountered Linda at all before she was living with that cancer, and it may have altered the personality that I dealt with.

If Linda's presence and interactions on this forum during those last months and years of her life are the way her family saw her, then I don't think anything that has been posted since then is likely to change their perspective. If it is NOT the way they saw her, then the best they could do would be to ignore the existence of the forum, because the reality of her presence and interactions here is not pretty.

I suspect that remembering her from the time before the cancer began to eat her alive is the best approach for her family and anyone else who truly knew her, though it won't be easy to determine when that process became relevant or to look back through what were probably subtle changes over time.
That is what I would wish them to remember if they can. However much Topix may have dominated her life toward the end, any discomfiture with the nature of her interactions here should perhaps be regarded as part of the sadness of her ending.

There was a time when this forum routinely featured links to popularized write-ups about current research, much of which was fairly interesting. It made the trashing and bashing worth looking past in order to catch the good stuff. Not so much comes around any more.
Take a look at the forum and consider the initial purpose of any thread in the top dozen or so that has survived more than, say, 1000 posts.
As I scan it, one is a pot thread and the rest are about the Ohio law in some way or another.
Looking way further down the list, there is another that is about the Michigan law.
The first thread that even relates to tobacco-smoking-related research seems to be the one about the lack of justification for certain uses of a quit-line. It has all of 4 posts.
The long-standing threads have all long since lapsed into homogenized vats of vindictive spew for the most part.

That is neither particularly pleasant nor captivating. I am fed up with all the catty crap over who has used what names and where.
I've no interest whatsoever in what cutesy picture or video someone has found and thinks it exciting to post as if they thought it involved somebody else on the forum.
How have we gotten to a state where the most exciting subject for a month is someone's complete inability (real or feigned) to grasp the basic concept of a percentage?
It was bad enough reading through the endless rounds of "It has nothing to do with public health" and "It is all about public health"; the interminable bouts of "It's a property rights issue" and "No, it isn't."
It is likely I will drop off for a time soon (not soon enough for some, I know, and you needn't say it). Not a promise, just a prediction.

QUESTION- Are you, Hugh Jass and/or "TruthBeTold" Payed Posters?
Though your question wasn't addressed to me, I'd like to offer an observation. Why would anyone pay to have someone else make posts here? If this was a mass medium that was reaching millions of viewers, sure, that might be a possibility. I just checked to see how many viewers were looking at ALL of the smoking forums right now: only 36.(And that's high --- it's usually less than 20.) There's no payoff with so few individuals involved. What you have is a small bunch of regulars in a virtual bar, trading insults. And they've been doing it for years...

She was a nice person. I never met her, but we had nice conversations in email. She was a good Christian woman. People are not perfect and certainly none of the posters who were cruel to her can throw any stones whatsoever. RIP to a heroic spirit and I know you are smiling from heaven at all of us fools who are still seeing through a glass darkly.

God Bless You, Linda.
