Mass. smokers sue Philip Morris on cancer checks

This idea is irrational. In my book another attempt to punish the tobacco companies even further. To bad the attornys that file such law suits can not be sued them selves. Even if lung cancer was found the question of how the person developed lung cancer would still be questionable. Perhaps this might be a great idea in a way. A complete back ground history of every one involved. Place of birth, known polution in the area, type of home construction. radon in the area, number of chest x rays given free like candy in the days of TB, locations of those involved during US above ground nuclear testing, job environments drug useage both legal and non legal. Heck if a accurate histroy was used we might get some real answers not the old American Cancer Society propaganda!

Damn it, I am so sick and tired of this crap. I quit smoking a little over a year ago. I did it because I knew it could kill me. When are people going to stop this crap, and accept some personal responsibility? I don't think you have the right to sue the cigarette company when you know damn well that smoking can kill you. They even put a warning on the damn pack of cigarettes that reads something like: SMOKING IS HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

These lawsuits are getting out of hand, fat people suing McDonalds, sick smokers suing tobacco companys, it is outrageous! I'm surprised that people who drink and drive arent' suing the alchohol companies when they wreck their cars.

America, the land of blaming everyone else.

Personal responsibility? Most people with pea-brain's are incapable of accepting personal responsibility and they must have someone take them by the hand and lead them through life. Unfortunately, their lack of a thought process is affecting everyone else as well. That's the sad part! We all have to pay for their "clueless" minds, while their lawyers are loving the Dollar Signs$$$$$$$$$$s

tobacco cos. have for years been lying to everyone about their product. sure they were forced to put a warning lable on their products but they have added all sorts of toxic items to the tobacco to keep the addiction going. tobacco cos. only worry about their profit,not their customers health .why should we care if they get shafted

Who in their right mind would think that directly inhaling burning leaves would not lead to some health problems? This has nothing to do with the tobacco companies.

My mom died of lung cancer. She had quit smoking 30 years ago and yet the doctor said that there is no doubt in his mind the the cigarettes caused the cancer. My mom started smoking when the tobacco companies were lying to everyone, stating that their product was safe before they were forced to label their their product as unsafe. I am now alone, trying to get through college and support myself. The tobacco companies should be forced to pay for their lies.

OMG, Please tell me that you are not saying that the tobacco companies should pay for your college, rent/mortgage, utilities,(support you)etc, because your mom's doc said "there is no doubt in his mind the cigarettes caused the cancer." I feel your pain of losing your mother, as I have lost mine as well, lung problems (not cancer) also. There really is no way that anyone can "prove" that cigarettes and cigarettes ALONE, causes anyone's cancer! There is just TOO MANY cancer causing chemicals in SO MANY things that we eat, drink and breathe! ACS has just made tobacco companies an easy target for sue happy people, with their antismoking propaganda.
Also, in relation to the article, I wonder if these 100 something thousand people will have to "prove" that they actually smoked a Phillip Morris brand cigarette and actually smoked them as long as they SAY they did? Looks like that would be hard to prove.

i think it is just stupid that people sit here and are suing cigarette compnies for them having cancer on the side of the bow it warns you of what can happen now if you still choose to do it that is your problem the companies did not make you smoke them you went out and got them yourself. damn anymore people are just looking for an excuse to get money..

Its nobodies fault but your moms that she died she is the one that smoked on her own free will the cigarette companies did not force her to smoke i am sure that she knew what could have happend from her smoking

i woulden't be to hard on the lady for making that choice. first as older people know back in the 40s,50s and 60s smoking was the cool thing to do. the tobacco cos. had the best add cos. most of the top actors and celebs were paid to use or pitch the weed. The army ,with good reason, gave smokes to the troops and sold them tax free on base. I have heard from my grand dad that the red cross also gave them to the troops.it looks as if most everyone smoked.[i don't know the percentage] Tobacco is very addictive and without help and encouragement from people around you its not easy to quit.

i think tobacco cos. should have the hell sued out of them. they have pushed first one lie than another about their product. i say more power to the people who were duped by them and addicted by their product. i hope the tobacco cos pay through the A--!

What more is there to learn? The cigarette companies dont put guns to peoples heads and make them smoke. They put a warning on the pack of cigarettes that says "smoking causes lung cancer, stroke, heart disease, etc...." It is widely known in society that smoking is bad for you. What else is there? Many people know some strange things with no doubt in their mind. Some know that aliens walk amongst us, other know that Jesus was the son of God, whilst other know Jesus WASN'T the son of God.

Point being, having no doubt in your mind is no guide to accuracy. Statisticall, and antis do love their statistics the odds of developing lung cancer drop back to normal within 10-15 years after you quit smoking. In others words smoking had no bearing on your mother's cancer and it was irresponsible of the Doctor to blame it for her condition.

Is kinda a easy out for the dr.yes ! many aliens around,when i looked into the mirror this a.m, i was sure a nasty alien had replaced me.

You have to be harmed buy the action/product whatever.Just because your grandfather died ,we don't know the age 99 perhaps,is no reason to be mad at the farmer. You might even come out ahead with him gone, perhaps you were his inheritor.
