As a smoker, I think this is a wonderful idea... if it actually works. Raising the taxes on alcohol would be another great way of raising money to fund other social spending agendas.

This tax increase on cigarettes is ten years overdue. Leave it to Mitch to shake us from our slumber and get Indiana out of the gutter with some progressive and responsible ideas. After all Indiana did have the second lowest cigarette taxes in the nation, only ahead of lowly Kentucky. Let's move forward.

I'm for this tax increase. Its needed. I have many friends who have cut way back in their smoking because it isn't allowed in the bars in bloomington. They are healthy and agree that if the tax is raised they would seriously think about quitting smoking entirely.

Lest we not forget that it was the Democrats who initiated this bill, and the democrats keep raising it, not mitch, but your probabaly thinking he paid that democrat off too aren't you?

I am taxed out folks. Plain and simple. I have lived in Indy for 15 of the 20 years I have legally been an adult. Those years elsewhere showed me just how over taxed the citizenship of Indiana is.

I have had it with the tax burden Indiana has put on its citizenship. You add up all the little fees for this that and the other and all the taxes on this that and the other and Indiana is one of the most heavily taxed States in America.

Personally I am done with it. My house goes on the market ASAP and I am relocating to another State. I have spent 5 years building an online business that has finally taken off in a huge way. I am taking my money and my tax revenue to a much more deserving and fair State.

Fairwell Indy.

Come to Arizona. There are many many people here from IN. Soon the only people who will have to worry about IN taxes will be the illegals.

Every time this subject comes up, I see responses of the form "alcohol is just as bad, why don't you tax alcohol?"

First off, alcohol is taxed. And its taxed by the same departments that tax tobacco. But that's not my point.

Numerous unbiased studies have shown health benefits to drinking alcohol *in moderation*. Can someone point me to recent unbiased studies with similar findings for tobacco?

Whether you like it or not, less than 1 percent of alcohol drinkers drink to the point of having health problems, or drive while drunk. The same goes for people who overeat at fast food restaurant...the majority do not pig out. On the other hand, 100 percent of cigarette smokers will have their health impacted negatively from cigarettes. Cigarettes are the one consumer product that if used according to directions, it will kill you.

Do I think tobacco should be taxed this heavy? No (and I'm not a smoker). I think the government should learn to live within its means, not tax every darned thing in sight. And I especially disagree with "sin" taxes. I also find it a bit stupid that the state wants people to quit smoking but at the same time depends on that smoking to fund the budget. But I find it pure ignorance to lump alcohol and fast food in to the same group as cigarettes.

" Smoking kills. But before it kills, it leaves smokers sick and dying -- and the rest of us have to pay for it."

Total BS. Smokers who are going to die from cancer will do so in their 40s and 50s before they are eligible for medicare or any public assistance.

I hate the socialist Indiana government so bad that I quit smoking!!!!! Go pick somebody else's pocket to make Eli Lilly and Mitch rich.(Before that I bought all my smokes out of state anyway -- where they were way cheaper.)

The sooner these socialists bankrupt the state and country, the better. They haven't got enough sense to see that they are taxing on borrowed time -- with all our jobs going to Asia.

Go ahead and smoke and die young, and if you have kids leave them without a parent. Your money, if you want to blow it on smokes that is your business.

I am moving as soon as my Bankruptcy is over. I have had it here!!!!This place does not operate like a Democracy!!!If you arent Bankrupt yet, then count your blessings. The way Mitch is selling off our assets you may not even have to worry about foreclosure. They will get your House first anyways.
Takings right, stealing land, taxed out of home, no voice, what is that called? Spying on Americans-----my God! The list never stops.
