Tobacco companies are no angels, however, when is the public going to take responsibility for their own actions? My grandfather, born in 1918, told me that cigarettes were called "coffin nails" when he was a young boy, long before any warnings were placed on the side of the packs. If no one ever quit smoking, these people might have an argument, but, smokers quit all the time, though I hear it's extremely difficult, yet they do it. Honestly, this game is being played over money. If a lawyer can smell the cash, it's fair game... even though no one forces a smoker to drive to the store, pay an exhorbitant price, place it in their lips, light it and inhale smoke that honestly smells like crap. The devil must make em do it, huh?

b rock: "coffin nails," the phrase your grandfather remembered, is both vivid and accurate.

Well, that might be true in some of the litigation, but in this particular case, it was the Department of Justice that was pursuing the racketeering litigation, not private attorneys, and in the end, there was no financial penalty levied against Big Tobacco. I see your point about personal responsibility, but when it comes to cigarettes, I don't agree. Most smokers take up smoking in their teens, when they don't know any better, when they think they're invincible, when they think they will never become addicted. By the time most smokers grow up and *do* know better, they have a very powerful physical addiction that is incredibly difficult to beat. It's been well-documented that Big Tobacco has known for decades that nicotine was addictive, and that they have gone to great lengths to market to teenagers. They continue marketing to teenagers today by paying Hollywood millions of dollars to put cigarettes into teen movies. So, I think the tobacco companies have been guilty of some horrible, heinous acts over the decades and do deserve to pay these big penalties and forced to own up to what they have done. |

And don't think for one moment that the government wasn't aware of all those very same facts. They were. They are just as guilty of deceit because they continued to allow it. I'm not condoning any lies or deceit by big tobacco, but they are not alone in that dept. ALL big industry does it, and the pharmaceuticals are probably the worst offenders, yet no one is condeming them. Just look at all the drugs they push on TV..........then look at possible side effects (usually worse than the problem the drug is supposed to help). And government is not doing a thing. I no longer trust any branch or form of government for anyone with enough money can get them to look the other way. And that includes any and all special interest groups also. Anti-tobacco is using public funds (taxpayer dollars) to push laws that are more and more about discrimination against a group of people than they are about protecting anyone, AND they are doing so with extreme exaggeration and outright lies. |

Top personal of Tobacco Cos. and their Advertising agencies should be tried for mass murder. All people who defend and promote smoking should be treated the same way.

Chantix kills a lot faster than tobacco, but as of now, warnings are not required on all the government mandated "no smoking" signs.

I have never heard of "Chantix" itself killing anyone. Have you? |

People who defend or promote smoking should at the very least be charged with Criminal Manslaughter.

Well he might have smoked them, but he was a Non Smoker. I wonder what his actual body count was ? Now on the other hand Stalin was a smoker but he did pretty good on the body count.! lol. |

But you have to admit it does weed out the weak. Kinda what nature had intended in the first place. You might think of society as a rather large buffalo herd. |
