Scofflaws unite! Exposing workers to toxic smoke may make for big profits for business owners, but the process should not be cast as a rights issue for the owners and the smokers. Pitiful is the word to describe the gaggle of addicts defying laws passed to regulate a poison gas that most of us have the common sense to avoid.

If you say "most" of us have the common sense to avoid SHS, then why is there an employee issue with respect to SHS? Answer: There isn't! No employee is forced to work where smoking is permitted. Service industry workers (waiters/waitresses) have non-smoking jobs to choose from. If they work at a bar where smoking is permitted.... then it was a CHOICE! What does this mean? It means that smoking bans in adult only establishments, such as bars, are not necessary unless the owner wants to make it non-smoking.

You just don't get it "Fool Boy", do you? EVERY workplace in 2008 should be smoke free. You can't pick and choose which employees you are going protect. Employees of Bars are not second class citizens. Most of the Bar owners are out for the almighty buck and could care less about the health and safety of its employees. THAT'S WHY THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO STEP IN AND MAKE THE MUCH NEEDED AND OVERDUE SMOKING RESTRICTIONS.
IT'S A HEALTH THING FOOLBOY!!! You wouldn't understand.
Health conscious people finding jobs should NOT BE RESTRICTED because of YOUR SMOKING ADDICTION, just who the hell do you smokers think you are? The days of smoking wherever the F you want are over. GET IT, FoolBoy!!!
People bitched and moaned when the office workplace smoking restrictions took effect many years ago too, but the world hasn't stopped.
More and more smoking restrictions are going to go into effect because it's the RIGHT THING to do.
Your addiction should not impact anyone but YOU!!!!

I live in New Jersey. Just ask
the casinos in Atlantic City what the smoking ban has done.
They are all going to Philadelphia.

OMG!!! You're such an idiot. I mean you ring the bell on the idiot scale. Nobody is picking and choosing which employees we (by we you mean Uncle Sam) are going to protect. WAKE UP!!!! The employees should protect themselves. DUH!!!!!!!!!! If an employee is offended by SHS, then don't apply for work where smoking is permitted. Apply for a job where smoking is prohibited. Some people do not mind or actually prefer working where smoking is permitted. This isn't rocket science and if you weren't a NAZI you would understand this. But you don't because it fouls up your nazi agenda.

Some people evidently will sell good health and their souls to make a buck. Let Hawaii please focus on being a healthy place to visit. The police department should be deligent in compliance of the no smoking ban. Peoples lives literally depend on their efforts.

Barack Obama stopped smoking last year.

What a mean-spirited column. I can't believe the Star printed this trash.

LOL.

I'm sure the failing economy and the increases in gas prices, number of home foreclosures, air fares, etc. had nothing to do with the drop in tourism.

It is all because the 10 percent of Americans who smoke are refusing to vacation in Hawai`i, the "health" state.

LOL.

I don't smoke, but I have no problem with smokers having some bars to smoke in. If I choose not to inhale second hand smoke I will stay away from those bars! Hello, how hard is that? In regards to workers, I was a cocktail waitress for years and my best customers and tippers were the smokers! Nowadays I see all the customers outside smoking, and not spending money inside. How are bars supposed to make money with all their customers outside? The bars should be allowed an exemption if they choose.

Smoke free Fred is your typical nanny government Democrat. He thinks the government knows what is best for you and is totally against freedome of choice.

Hey Fred brah, you don't want to work where smoking is allowed. DON'T

You don't want to go where smoking is allowed. DON'T

You ever think about taking responsibly for yourself and exercising your freedom of choice.

The two authors' wishful thinking is to say something untrue often enough that people might believe it.

Japanese tourism preferences are primarily driven by smoke-free rules???

Right. Then why are New York, Sydney, LA, London, Paris, Hong Kong -- which are also ALL smoke-free -- their most popular destinations?

Might as well argue that the sun travels around the earth every day. After all, lots of people believed that for a long time -- and maybe a few folk still do.

Hey, Paul brah, you don't want to work where smoking is not allowed? Don't. You don't want to go where smoking is not allowed? DON'T. You ever think about taking responsibility for yourself and exercising your freedom of choice? Oh, you mean existing conditions might limit your freedom, like in the pre-ban days when a non-smoking waiter needed a job but there weren't any non-smoking bars. He still needed to pay the rent, so he worked where he had to work until he could change the existing conditions. That's called democracy, brah.

I've been to Japan many times. There is an increasing number of places which prohibit smoking. I do not believe that the Japanese coming to Hawaii are decreasing because of our non-smoking policy. The declining numbers are due to high airfares primarily.
