Why do we pay tax every year on an automobile anyway? Tax was paid at the time of purchase!
I do not smoke and never have. With that said, why are the smokers getting picked on? Soda is bad on teeth, but the soda drinkers do not get picked on!

Being around soda drinkers has never, to my knowledge, been placed in the top five preventable causes of death in the US. You will have to do far better if you expect to be seen as having a valid analogy for smoking.

Sales taxes and gas taxes should be used for roads like most states do. Paying sales taxe on automobiles every year is no different then paying a tax on your refrigerator every year.
Dying in a car crash is preventable but do we target passengers? Targeting a group is not right. It's every adults choice to smoke or not. Government needs to mind it buisness.

Passengers aren't a likely cause of an accident, so why target (tax?) them?
A smoker is his own (preventable) cause for health issues which increase health care and insurance costs for everybody.

Being around people drinking beer does not directly cause deaths and higher insurance rates. I DO see a ridiculous effort to posit an analogy.

Again, it is a behavior that is focal in the proposed tax, not a group of people. Quit smoking, or quit buying smokes, and you would cease to be negatively impacted by the tax. Begin smoking, or begin buying smokes, and you would begin to be negatively impacted by the tax. You are still the same person, you just engage in a different set of activities.

As to the nationalism bit, smoking is on the chopping block internationally. You need to read something other than tobacco-industry-driven propaganda. Hey, maybe you should read the package your cigarettes come in, and THINK about it.
