..and can we leave religions out of it, that's not what the original question is about. If it happens to this many people I don't think it has anything to do with what your beliefs are. roseann I'm glad you feel so strongly for your God, but other people may not find the same hope and salvation in something that has worked for you. Like different medications - something that may work for one person may not help the next.

The feeling does have a strong spiritual aspect to it, its more of horror than anything else though, but please leave religions out of it.

there is no symptons for it because it is not a sickness, so my only advice to any one out there is to pray, and if you do not belive in prayer then you better start now because what you are feeling is real and is spirtual, so dont mess with it you really do not know what you are messing with if you do, so for anybody going through this with an open heart you better be sure it is open for JESUS, ask him into your heart and trust that he has won the battle when he died once and for all, GOD BLESS and take care i pray you take my advice.

I usually get them about once every month to 2 months. They are usually accompanied by a dream in which I dream that I fall asleep, and dream that I fall asleep... etc.(This trend has continued up to 8 times). Upon awaking from each "sleep stage" I get the "electirc shock" sensation. It can really be quite vivid terriffying. Anyways, unlike some people, this has never happened to me after drinking. It started when I was 13, long before I had even touched alcohol.
In fact, it started happening to me the day after I got home from the hospital after having nuerosurgery about 7 years ago. I just had one during a nap, and since I was consious (but still asleep somehow) while it was happening, decided to google it, and even decided what terms to search for (in my sleep. Imagine that.) Anyways, after my surgery I had seizures (as is fairly common after neurosurgery) and was even put on anti-seizure medication for a year until the seizures stopped. After the surgery, I would also get a loss of sensation and tingling all over one side of my body, which my nuerosurgeon hypothesized was a mild form of a siezure. I've always interpreted these "electric shocks" during sleep as an extreme form of this tingling. Really, think of the sensation of your foot falling asleep and multiply that by one hundred. Now imagine that sensation in your brain and traveling down your spine into your extremities. I'm sure that would describe what most people here are experiencing (correct me if I'm wrong). I am NOT a doctor or neurologist, but I guess my working theory is this is some kind of mini-siezure, though I have also considered the possibility that it is a different form of a night terror.
Anyway, it would be nice to see someone do some research on this, though I fear it's not common enough of a condition. I was surprised to see this many people respond to this thread, though.

No prayer necessary. What you are experiencing with the buzzing like electric shocks may be a symptom temporal lobe epilepsy. It also has the symptom of de je vous.
Prayer maybe good for you if your a Christian, but it isn't demons although it is often accompanied by fear it may be a part of a partial seizure which is part of the temporal lobe epilepsy.
People with this sometimes have religious visions as well.
Look it up!

this has happened to me many a-times and its getting worse. when i was younger i would have sleep paralysis and either im dreaming that im in my room or my eyes are open and im half asleep but i saw a demon entering my door and it scared the crap out of me. so i call on my mom for help and then the Lord and i would wake up. it was horrible. So last year my friends got me to try some drugs (don't judge) Acid and shrooms, and i had like..an almost death experience on shrooms and ended up in the hospital, it was horrifying....since then....instead of sleep paralysis..when i think about something too hard, like depressing stuff about life, i actually feel like..my spirit is trying to leave my body ..and so i feel that my arms or whatever getting numb and my vision of the rooms gets weird..the colors seem more depressing i dont know how to explain it, but i feel like im stuck between two worlds...or something...one time this happened and my body started hyperventilating and i threw up like 20 times in the bathroom and went to the hospital..........and the last time when i had sleep paralysis was a couple of days ago, when i was alone sleeping in my bf's bed, and i saw like two dark shadows staring at me and one got right on top of me. i feel like im going insane...any suggestions?

I've got a simaler problem to lizards, this happened to me again last night. I was on the couch, when i woke up, tried to go back to sleep, . oh wait yeah when i woke up it was because of that physical and mental scary electric.. feeling. when this happens it always feels like im almost awake but i cant move or blink but much like when you try to screem yourself out of a bad dream you can wake yourself up if you keep trying. When this happens EVERYTIME i feel something.. best described as being close to the real hell. so anyways i was trying to go back to sleep, somehow did and woke up not breathing, as if i had no breath, im not good at describing things but if you can understand this, the electric hell thing and the no breath has happened to me for 2 years oh yeah and i've had very REAL dreams of hell

there are no medical answers because it is not a medical condition, as for it been tic deloreux its not as i am sure if it was or is it would be known to you by now as some doctor somewhere would have said so, edwin you wrote yourself that you have seen doctors in germany and the us and they have no clue, well again i would like to tell you why they have no clue and why they are not likley to have one, its because what you are all experienceing is spirtual and the only help is jesus.i am not saying that tic delourx is not what one reader has if that is what your doc has said and is treating you for well i hope you are feeling much better now, but for those of you who can get no answer from your doc well i urge you to consider what i am telling you, god bless and i pray that my message will help you all if not at least one, praise be to the living god who i trust with all my heart and soul because he has surley seen me through many a dark night, because his ways are not my ways i give him all that i am and trust in him daily to get a glymps of the life he has for me and not the life that i was dying forever in before him insdead now i die daily to my old self and live for the new i have in him, Amen.

Sleep shock.. so I finally get to a computer and see that its not only me. Took me yrs to figure out how it was happening because i knew it was an outside force. At that point right inbetween sleep and awakeness, a sudden bright flash in my closed eyes, a snap sound, electric snap, ands what feels like a tazer hit to the brain. It is not physical. It is the electric grid and it is used by someone, something , who knows what, I do not know. The shock comes from outside, a satelite maybe? it must hit an electrical item in your room , and the ricochetes into your head, like a taser. The cure: remove everything that is electronic, or battery operated or has a computer chip in it from your room. Especially Tvs, ANYTHING w/a computer chip in it of any size.. out of the room. Double AA batteries (or any kind) Out of the room. EVERYTHING having to do with electricty has to be removed from your place of sleeping and behind your closed door. Take tin foil, or gift wrap that has a paper side and a shiny foil side and make wall outlet coversto tape on over them, covering the plug holes, so any discharge of electricity out of them will be reflected back. Cover all outlets, shiny side facing towards the outlet its taped over. Pjone outlets, cover (and no phones in the room), cable tv outlets especially need to be covered with shiny side in foil of some sort. Just remove all electric objects and cover any inlet to your room. The electric grid is at fault, not your health. This is an outside force and it seems to be used as a punishment for being outspoken on the internet. This will be my only post here. I do not have a computer. Try my technique and get a restful night of sleep, or at least a great reduction in symptoms, till you find that lone aa battery in your drawer you forgot to remove from your sleeping room.. or item with small computer chip. Good Luck to all of you. Its the grid. Its used as a weapon. Take care. ;)

Forgot to add.. No lamps, light bulbs, Nothing! Nothing plugged in at all. Heck turn the breakers off at night. I've done that and had peace. NOTHING of electric usage in your sleeping room. Get a wind up alarm clock, or wrap it in shiny side inwards foil wrapping paper, or foil, and learn to hit the snooze button by feel ;)

Alcohol and sedating medications probably would not cause the sensations you are experiencing. More likely it is sleep paralysis, usualy happens in the early morning, left over from the muscle atonia of rem sleep, a bit scary but harmless..
Check out The sleepwhisperer.net lots of info and a bunch of sleep profesionals to answer questions.

Cool. There's a community of us, it seems.=)
let's see if I can map it out more specific to myself: Of course it occurs when I'm sleeping. More often during naps than normal night's sleep. Don't know how it starts because I don't wake up until the intensity is acute. Gwen is right about the waves. Like a pulsing. But it certainly does feel kinda like I'd imagine a tazer to the brain to feel like.(which is presumable the only thing Passing Thru had right) My ear drums beat VERY rapidly. Like *THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP* with no spaces. There is certainly a shortness of breath which at first made me look into Sleep Apnea-which it's not. The strange thing is, where I believe I differ from most is that I can control whether or not I can let it get painfully intense. I don't want it to go away, so I just keep it at a low level. The only problem is, it's very tiring, so if I let it go on for too long, I fall back to sleep and it get's really crazy. I have *tried* to see what happens when I let it go... I'm sure we are all curious if the brain will litterally explode... And as far as I'm concerned, I think it would definitely damage itself. My ear drums may also explode. I mean it. The problem is, I do get scared beyond a certain point and I have to concentrate to pull it back. The paralysis is true for me also. I can't move. I can open my eyes and look around freely. I even once had vague hellucinations, but that's pretty much the most movement I can get. Eventually, if I try rolling back and forth enough, I can break through, roll over, and sleep fine for the rest of the night.
Very intriguing. I read the articles about the epilepsy and such that people posted, and none of that seems like a match to this. Why are there no doctors here?=P

Look under "Sleep paralysis".
From Wikipedia.
This is it.
People who have migraines are also more likley to have these.
If you do not have migraines yet, you probably will.

I have never commented on any forums; however, I have been experiencing these symptoms so I googled. The irony behind this is that last night I felt an electrical shock through my upper body and heard growling from a distance... I realized that I wasn't asleep, and I'm very familiar with spiritual attacks so I rebuked it. I opened up my bible and began reading the first page I came across, and it was Psalms 35. I believe that I'm being attacked because I've offered to help a friend bless his house due to activity in his home... It was no mistake that I came across this forum!! Thanks!

This is interesting. This is the first time I have googled this subject...and find a lot of common symptoms with what is posted here.

This has happened to me several times and did again last night. Mine is a pulsing thru the whole body kind of feeling and always while sleeping. I also get the feeling I can't speak...but really don't have the sense that I am paralyzed. I do get a very strong feeling that it is something spiritual...and feel the need to pray. And I get the sense that I can make it stop on my own. While I find it scary...I'm not really sure it feels evil. Does that make any sense at all?

Daily Horoscope for December 11

Scorpio

Take it slowly today otherwise you'll be almost guaranteed to lose your temper and make yourself very unpopular in the process. If someone is annoying you, you won't need any encouragement to start a row because you're looking for outlets for your current ire and irritation. OK, but do your best to direct your anger at the person who deserves it and not at innocent bystanders.
