Was diagnosed with shingles three days ago. Severe pain in upper back side and under arm. Only one bump broke out at the spot of first pain. Dr. gave me anti-viral, prednisone and hydrocodone. After three days on the medicine, no more bumps have came up and the one I had appears to be going away. The pain is still horrible, but not as severe. Is this normal course for shingles? I now have a severe chest cold and cough.

Had rash outbreak 12 days ago, diagnosed with shingles. Dr. gave me Valtrex/antiviral for 7 days & gave me darvocet for pain- did'nt help then hydrocodone - didn't help. 12 days later I went into ER where they gave me a shot for pain...this worked. Dr. claims it will last about 3 weeks but pain could last even after rash is gone. Pain is unbearable. I don't believe the cold & cough are part of the shingles. Your immune system is low so you may have just gotten a cold.

I think it is normal. Try Gabapentin for pain.. worked for me.Nine months later my eye lid still burns..but not horrible pain. |

Thanks for the responses. It now seems I have developed pneumonia, so that is part of the chest pain.

cough symptons are normal with shingles have had for 20 years and always get a dry cough every time!!
