Hello,
I've never had any serious health issues. I recently had a rash on my chest and back that caused me to go to the Dr. He prescribed 50 mg of prednisone a day for 7 days. I'm a female weighing 130 lbs. By day 4 I couldn't function because I was feeling severly depressed and confused. I stopped taking it immediately and it has now been a week and I'm still feeling very down, confused, extremely exhausted, frustrated and have been having random body aches. When will it go away?! I just want my life to go back to normal. The rash is slowly coming back, but I'd prefer to deal with it and live my life then deal with this. When will I feel better and back to normal?

My dad has been on Prednisone for Crohn's Disease for 28 years, he is 50 years old. He has worse withdrawls than a Heroin Addict. One Dr tells us he will die if he stays on it. He has developed diabetes, congested heart failure, bones are depreciating, high blood pressure, and everything inbetween. When he tried to go down off of it gradually, he breaks out in every crevice of his body- eyelids, arm pits, behind his knees, everywhere. The rash he gets is red, raw, seeping, and has a foul odor, and makes his skin peel. Does anybody know of any way or medicine or anything- to help with the withdrawls. He has also experienced every symptom mentioned in the previous posts. Is there a natural remedy, or a medicaine to help the Adrenal Gland to adjust? Or any kind of medicine to reverse or stop these effects? God Bless each of you, and please if anyone has any info, please post it. We're desperate for any info. If we dont do something quickly... I'm going to lose my dad. Thanks for all your help!- Michelle, Indiana
I take "Adrenal Stress End" I get it from my homeopathic Dr. I too would get seeping, oozing, itchy sores that would crack open if I moved. Prednisone is the only thing that helped until I started to take natural stuff. Enemas helped a lot and natural herbal pills from health food store that helped keep my bowels moving good. If I even begin to get constipated a little , my rash flares up bad and I have to go right back on prednisone.

Go to a homeopathic doctor, they can give u a treatment that works without any side effects. It might not work almost immediately like the prednisone, but believe me u do not want to get physically addicted to that stuff. Stopping prednisone abruptly can kill u. I was on this stuff almost a year. My skin is thinning, and I've gained a lot of weight and have no energy at all. Do whatever u can to stay off of it.

To anyone trying to get off prednisone good luck and keep trying. I was on between 60 mg and 5mg of prednisone for 11 years. I have not taken any since late September of this year. Even now I have severe leg cramps and severe shoulder aches especially at night. I am tired and always wondering if it is the withdrawal or my condition. I think now most of the pain has been the withdrawel of a real nasty medication. I have recurrent pericarditis and psoriatic arthritis. I have been taking Embrel with great success to help me wean off the roids. This worked great and also helped my psoriasis really well. The best advice I can give to get to no prednisone is this.
1. No alcohol at all- alcohol lowers the effect of the steriod and makes for more withdrawals and more condition symptoms.
2. Drink water- Drink as much water in a day that you can, I notice on the days that I drink more even now. Usually the more I drink the less sore I am.
3. Low sugar and low carbs- This works for me
4. Hang in there- we all now it weening sucks but try to keep stress down and keep positive
5. I also on occassion will take Ultram or aleve for pain with some results in a pinch. I also take Calcium, Magnesium, Glucosimine, and a good Multi with Ginsing in it for some energy. Natures Plus is great.
I tapered a bunch of different ways and never got to zero before. This last time I listened to me instead of listening to Docs that said you should not feel any different on one half of a milligram less. Once I hit about 7 mg I went down a half a milligram every two weeks. And I noticed for the first few days of this regiment I was tired, so maybe you should ween on Friday if you have the weekends off to let your body adjust a bit before going back to work. Well I hope this has been helpful to anyone going through this. I have heard even though you get to zero it can take up to six months to get prednisone out of your system, that is one strong drug. Good Luck all!
I liked your reply best of all the others. Besides the supplements, I also take B 12, B complex, Co Q 10 & Ibuprofen gels. It is best to stay on Pred and gradually whittle it down to allow your body to adjust until you are finally down to 1-2 mg daily, then 1 mg every other day, etc. until finally you are free. Please realize that you will be bothered for a time with fatigue and allow yourself to get more rest, until you feel better.

Hi guys....
New to this forum....My husband has had RA for 5 yrs and has been on preds 1 1/2-5 milligram pills....He is looking to cut down but has tried for one month now. He went through extreme withdrawal, the shakes, the night sweats, the food allergies you name it....temp drop...
Found out it is because when you go off Preds your adrenal glands need to produce cortisol on their own because preds supply your body with the cortisol...We know what it is just need to know how long it takes to rebuild the adrenal glands and how long to you have to suffer before it gets better....My husband cannot eat anything as he has allergies to almost everything right now a sure sign of Adrenal Gland problems....I was successful in getting off prednisone after three years of use with dosage as high 20 mg. I started in 2003 and ended in 2006 it is now 2011 and many of my withdrawal problems have subsided I beieve this to be because I used a vegetarian diet consisting of juices freshly made. Perhaps this method help you. The main thing recovering your a regaining the function of your adrenal gland is to focus on an alkaline regimen! I earnestly hope this infrmation will be of help to you.

I took it for a couple of months off and on. Tried to slowly wean off and must not have been slow enough (under doctor's orders), had adrenaline fatigue/crisis. So, taking 10 mg twice a day till Appt. on Friday. I hope he issues me a more gradual method of withdrawing from it or I will seek an Endocrinologist. My husband died , I sold my house, then asthma, now this. TIme for a break. Carol

I've bee on Prednisone for 28 months, started at 60 mg. I've been trying to stop for the last 12 months, once a get to a few mg. a day, I get those crashes, no energy, etc.

Through Googling adrenal exhaustion I found various vitamins and supplements that have helped. Some actually overstimulate the adrenals so that I get "wired". Most effective I have found is high dosage of B vitamins, I take 100mg 3/day, Pantethene, and pantothenic acid supplements.

Extremely important to take calcium and magnesium while on Prednisone, have your eyes tested and watch for diabetes.

I also found diet to be extremely important. No sugar, alcohol, caffeine and minimize bad carbs and red meat. I even started juicing vegetables and found that helps a lot. A dya after I go off that diet I notice a fatigue in my body. I'm hoping there's light at the end of this tunnel after 28 months , 12 to ween off of it.

I was prescribed prednisone for a lung infection/athsma, went on 50mg for 1.5 weeks developed sever pain in legs and muscle weaknes in legs. I could not walk for four days, it was unreal. the long story short, i guess it is a rare complication, according to the dr. The Dr. told me to take no more of pred and should clear up after the med left my system.

I still have the muscle and joint pain and do not know what to do. It has affected my life. I just want to know how long this should go on. It has now been 3.5 week since last dose and i can walk, with pain all the time, but can't sleep and do not want to take heavy pain killers.

Any info would be appreciated,

thanks

Just got off 3 weeks tapered treatment Prednisone for Lichen Ruber rash. Now diagnosed with cataracts at age 53! The withdrawl is absolutley terrible: weakness, congested lungs, confusion, sore feet, lightheadedness, general anxiety, nervousness, muscle cramps.... wondering about adrenal glands catching up (this was second round...first round was in July for 5 days only) Fullness in face and shakiness in legs....when will this be over? I wish I had not taken this drug...though the rash was pretty unbearable for last 4 months...shoulda/woulda/coulda .

Somebody please help me. I was diadnosed with Poly myalgia Rheumatica at end of Feb. I was put on Prednisone of 12-or 15 mil. I actually forget. I begged to not be put on this but the relief was there and doctor knew of no other remedy. Okay, now after crazy spring and summer, I am down to 3.5 -4 mil. I had 2 bad withdrawl attacks and simply boosted baxk to 4 mil. I would happy to bite the bullit and rid myself of this prednisone. I want to boost my adrennals but is that a problem under prednisone. Doctor told me, I would waste money on immune enhancing supplements like vitamins and minerals but I felt much better when I put them in my regement. I want off Prednisone. I went to Holistic Doctor and he said I would be off by December if I followed very very strict diet etc. I am afraid of shock and Diabetes and you name it. I am afraid of the backlash and I am uncomfortable with the steady course. I think there should be a counsel group for people on Prednisone. I have hit some depressing moments where i have thought my life is fading and I don't want to live. How can a doctor prescribe prednisone and not cousel me. I am so disgusted. I teach yoga and the heat and exercise helps greatly. If it weren't for the great students who have taken care to help me, i may have commit suicide by now. I work 2 jobs and it is difficult to be 100 per cent. It should not be this way. Tomorrow I am getting acupuncture from Chinese doctor who treats cause, not symtoms.. Please help me, I am a fun guy and my life is really being ruined.

Hi I have a long history of prednisolone use for Asthma. I was once dependent on it for 20 plus years. I pretty much feel exhausted most of the time and suffer debilitating Hypoglceamic type attacks. I am at my wits end trying to get some help. Drs just dont listen. I actually did the self diagnotic test shining a torch in my eye today my pupil didnt contract which is supposed to mean I have Adrenal Exhaustion. I am at my wits end and Drs just dont listen or worse smirk at my symtoms. Anyone else feel this way.

Hello to everyone,

I have been on a 53 day regient of prednisone . For the first two weeks I was on 40 mg. then dropped to 20 mg. for 30 days and now I was given 10 mg. for 10 days and that is it . Reading everything about withdrawl has me scared .. I spoke to my GI liver specialists nurse and she told me that the doctor responded with an answer of " I wasn't on a high enough dose for a long period of time to be concerned" . Is this correct...? thank you in advance ..

Edward.

I have been on prednisolone for two years, originally for temporal arteritis. I started on 40mg a day and decreased to 5mg quite easily. However I have been on 5mg for getting on for a year and am desperately trying to get off it. I now have very stiff muscles especially in the morning and sometimes it is painful to turn over in bed. My rheumy says I have developed polymyalgia rheumatica and that I need to stay on 5mg until the pain goes. I am not absolutely convinced - think it could be coming off the pred that is causing the pain. Anyway - how can he know more than I do?! I too am feeling very tired and sleep extremely well. I am also feeling a bit depressed which isn't like me. I keep trying to reduce but every time I do the pain gets worse.

About twice a year I get an RA flare-up bad enough to take a short burst of prednisone, which I keep in the house for these emergencies. This amounts to 2 or 3 weeks of pred including the weening period. The last time I did this, even with the weening period, my RA came roaring back much worse than before I took the short burst. My rheumatologist immediately put me back on the prednisone for a longer period of time and then a month-long weening period that even counted quarter tablets. This time the weening off was so slow that it worked. This makes me leery to do this again, although taking the prednisone makes me feel energetic like I don't have RA.......for a while at least. Anyone have the same experience?

Diagnosed with RA in August. I've been on low doses of prednisone since November. I feel wonderdul while taking it. No RA symptoms at all. I decided to ween myself off not wanting to take it the rest of my life. I was on two pills a day and weened slowly in 1/2 increments. I have been off completely for three days. I feel terrible!!!! I am determined to stay off. I am going to stick it out. Thanks. Your post is encouraging!!!
