My husband lived in the town of Herculaneum, right across the street from what is now Doe Run lead smelter, for the first 20 years of his life. The past three years he has been having symptoms of ALS/MS. He had a nerve conduction test two years ago that came back negative. I am still convinced something isn`t right. He is now 53 years old and very limited of any physical activity. He can walk, but is not steady on his feet. What other tests are available to diagnosis or rule out either disease?

As far as MS goes, he needs to have an MRI done. This shows the scarring left behind on the brain from MS attacks. Good luck with everything, and I hope it all works out for you two. God bless.

Don't forget the "lumbar puncture" (spinal tap, dammit!) and your husband's VERY detailed health history - from what I understand, a lot of doctors out there are very difficult to convince, especially with men, that anything's going on, and that they try to rule everything OUT before ruling multiple sclerosis IN.

I have heard that the spinal tap is key in diagnosing MS. I don`t know why the doctors didn`t recommend it but then again my husband needs to pursue this himself. I guess maybe he will when he wakes up one morning and can`t walk at all. I sure haven`t been able to get him to do anything about it. Thanks for your suggestions and good wishes.

there's a website - www.multiplesclerosissucks.com - started and maintained by a man with MS. It's very eye-opening, extremely honest and sometimes funny (especially the "thank you to MS" letter) Perhaps you can get your husband to look at it, and he'll see parts of his own story? Ignorance is bliss, but only for a little while.

Also a very definitive as it goes is a Evok test where they use light to test brain patterns. There are more than one type so check on this.( I believe it is called a visual evok)
Mans woes will soon be gone with the coming of his Gods) new system of things in which no one will be sick.

Mama Gorilla, you sound like a tough broad and I like that. MS does suck but as Dylan Thomas says "Do not go gentle into that good night. But rage, rage against the dying of the light" Sometimes the only choice we get is choice of attitude. As my friend said as we researched after she found out she had ovarian cancer, "knowledge is power" She is in her 15th year of remission.
