I am glad that justice was served for the family of this man may God continue to be with during these times.

My father was born in 1907 and spent all of this career working in the NN shipyard on ships and subs - surrounded by asbestos and breathing it into his lungs. He retired from the shipyard when he was in his mid 60s and lived until he was 93. During the later years he was besieged by lawyers trying to get him to enter into a lawsuit against the shipyard. There was no need - he was examined by several doctors and had all of the tests which showed clear lungs. I'm sorry, but I do not believe the facts in this article - it is just another of those successful lawyer suits that cost all of us many dollars!

Sun fun, it might be a nice coincidence that your father didn't have it. However, I know of several men that died in their 30's and 40's due to directly working with asbestos in the Shipyard. Cutting it, drilling through it, etc. significantly shortened their life.

I tend to believe there were other complications in these people's lives that contributed to their deaths. I know that my father was completed engulfed in asbestos without safety equipment during the time he was working on ships and subs. Sorry about your friends. I believe the lawyers were looking for profitable lawsuits against big companies.

CB - My father did his homework and had his lungs examined (but not in Newport News). Our family is not one for fraudulent lawsuits and my father had no interest in joining the lawyers in their pursuit of personal gain. Believe me, he had no interest in the pie you speak of.

i'm kindof on the fence about this...and I may show a little ignorance here but... if any of these people knew they were working in or with asbestos, why didn't they wear masks? Where they not available? Is asbestos so fine that its fibers fit thru the mask? I would think that if you were going to work with ANY type of insulation, one would wear a mask.
sometimes with these things, i'm not saying all the time, but sometimes people pull out lawsuits just to make a quick dime. I'm almost positive that being the Commander Master Chief - 2nd highest ranked person in the Navy - comes with a pretty substantial pension - at lest $250,000 a year. I dont know the family and dont know their motive for the money. And, more often than not, the lawyers are ambulance chasers.. advetising on tv for all of this stuff and the family doesn't see the total amount of the monies either... the lawyers bank a pretty big chunk...

They got taken if they only got $1.2 million, I know of two family that settle out of court for about $6.2 Million each and with the lawyer getting abouit half so they got about $ 3 million each.

The Company new about asbestos and so did the Federal Government and the ship building. That why they go after ship builders on this.

All: if it was a mesothelioma, it is unlikely (but possible) that there is another cause than asbestos. That said, John Crane made gaskets and it is simply ludicrous that a Command Master Chief was exposed to those. Could he have been exposed in his early years, quite possibly but unlikely that the gaskets were responsible. More likely that he was exposed to Johns-Manville amsoite thermal insulation from all the steam pipes running through the ships. Mesothelioma is a highly painful way to die, even under the current use of pain killers.

As for masks, impractical unless working directly with the product and generally ineffective (much litigation against 3M/AO/MSA and other mask manufacturers.

That said, the estate of a 75 year old man with a 1.2 Million dollar judgment receives about 55% of that post fees and costs.

Crane will appeal, they appeal all cases. Plaintiff's estate shoudl try and settle for between $600K and $750K

Wow, I'm amazed that in this day and age, with all the technology available to the nay-sayers of the asbestos=terminal cancer (mesothelioma) or asbestosis, that people can still post such nonsense as to say anyone exposed to asbestos(victim or family) and then litigated could have prevented it OR is out there looking for a quick buck. First, mesothelioma is ONLY caused from asbestos exposure. PERIOD. Two, if you skeptics would do your homework while perusing the internet for blogs to blow your igorance, you'd know that the companies guilty of polluting our forefathers and mothers lungs KNOWINGLY and WILLFULLY withheld the information of the hazzards of asbestos exposure from the world for decades. The employees of ANY workplace where he or she could have been exposed were NOT aware they were working with a dangerous substance, therefore, they were NOT aware they should be protecting their lungs. In addition - asbestos has a latency period of 30-50 years, folks. That means that symptoms aren't seen right away. There is much press about this my ignorant friends...READ IT. Google could really benefit some of you about now. Owens-Corning and Johns-Manville were two of the biggest perpetrators of the mass exodus our aging generations are facing. As for the author of the post who's father was LUCKY enough to have gone his entire life without ever contracting any asbestos related disease...GOOD FOR YOU! He is in the minority, you flippin' idiot. No, not every person exposed will develop malignant mesothelioma...however, pleural plaque and asbestosis are a pretty sure bet. The most frustrating thing about the arrogance in some of the previous posts is the assumption that the lawsuits are frivolous. That's so ridiculous to me...my father went to work at age 17 when his first son was on the way. He entered an apprenticeship for the Heating and Cooling and Asbestos Workers trade in 1959 and worked hands-on with asbestos powder, mixing it with water and then spreading it on pipes. He was making a living for his family and he was completely unaware until they pulled the plug on using asbestos insulation in the late '70s early '80s that he was exposing himself and us (his wife and six kids - he was covered in asbestos dust and we hugged him everyday when he got home and we did his laundry) to deadly fibers. He retired from that trade after 48 years...he got a gold watch and malignant mesothelioma. A TERMINAL CANCER only caused by ASBESTOS. It's a rare, aggressive, and horribly painful cancer...and will be a painful death. Because the companies that made the substance KNEW it was lethal but kept it quiet to make themselves and their shareholders money, my dad and mom are now worrying about how my mom will be able to afford the mortgage once my dad passes. The insurance will only cover the funeral expenses. Read about the history. It's interesting...morbidly interesting.

Automobiles are lethal, and people drive them every day. Kill a hell of alot more people than mesothelioma.

Grow up, stop calling everyone else ignorant because you don't agree with them.

Libby Mt is prime example of Govt and WR disGrace and many others to knowingly expose MILLIONS in 1963, to this deadly Tremolite asbestos from Libby Mt.When WR disGrace did Hamster studies using Libby Tremolite in the 60's and all the Hamsters died of Meso, which proved then, what causes Meso. Please read that again.Tremolite asbestos causes Meso.In the Town of Libby where over 2000 town folk are diagnosed to suffer till death, what do you people think of the EPA and others who continue to sell Libby Mt as a safe place to live and raise a family. This is a deadly lie.Since 1999, I have told all who will listen to stay away from Libby Mt as Libby is not safe to anything that breathes. It is because in 1999, I and three generations of my family were told the truth to why we are sick and dying. This should of ended in 1999.But it did not.And when EPA came to town, all of a sudden, the concern was not the health and safety of the people but "HOW CAN WE DOWNPLAY THE EXPOSURE and then :HOW MUCH MONEY CAN BE MADE".This is what Libby has become.Millions to be made from what was done to all of us.In the 10 years since we were told the truth, over $300 Million has gone throu that town and not one,NOT ONE HUMAN BEING has been saved nor protected and over 300 people/families have move to Libby since 1999, ONLY to continue this deadly Holocaust.Oh it ok thou,Libby Mt, where the hell is that? And 2000 people,no big deal.Remember, there is millions to be made.Follow the money trail.Anyway ya all,We ALL have a stake in this nitemare. It does not matter if it is you or uncle Bob or the dude down the block,WE ALL have a duty, yes YOU TOO, to warn, inform and protect all from something we now know kills you. This is all about those we leave behind.Because it is too late for my children born and raised in Libby to suffer till death also,my GOD,how can we not save the children and grandchildren.By telling the truth and staying away from Libby Mt.See, one person can make a difference.I save people, children and grandbabies because of what has been done to me and my family. We all have this in common...the children. To me thats all that matters even when things seem hopeless.Hugs them kids and tell them you love them everyday. We have to because everyday may be our last...Take care and God Bless.myMeso and asbestoswatch. great sites to learn and tell a friend and loved one.
