Because the VP Candidate says a lot about the Presidential Candidate, and reflects upon the Presidential Candidate a lot. Plus, as they say, this puts someone one heartbeat away from being President. There are still people alive today who remember the day that Reagan was shot, and Kennedy was assassinated. Romney could drop dead of a heart attack in his first year in office and Ryan would be his replacement.
That is why the VP Candidate matters.
