What have the parents done to demonstrate they can now handle their child's medical care? None. Request denied.

And what happened when the family tried to manage their son's care themselves? The Mother takes the boy on a trip to Mexico to avoid medical care. If not for the intervention of the courts and government authorities, this poor boy would be dead.

This is a great example of why we need government involved from the pre-natal staes of our lives. If we have someone watching over the decisions made by our caregivers, then we can rest assured they will be the right decisions. An impartial third party like the State or Federal government is best suited to do just that task.

Wow, once again, you are able to take a single data point and extrapolate an entire system from it. Congratulations would be in order if that was an effective method.

You brought this on yourself by your immature, unintelligent, and abusive treatment of your child. Now you get to have someone look over your shoulder, because you can't be trusted to do the right (and legal) thing. Simple as that. Personally, I think this kid's medical care should be monitored until he is 18, because you know this crackpot woman will pull the same stunt again.

Interesting comment. I'm wondering, though...you said the mother was a hero when she ran off to Mexico with the kid last time, because she was fighting against big pharma and big medicine.

So, which is it? You can't stand in both places. Pick one.

If the family is following the doctors orders, and Daniel is receiving the best medical care, then the courts involvement would be minimal, at most. They just need verification of treatments and check ups.
With the life of a child at stake, I say keep the court involved until he is declared cancer free, and is done with all treatments.

I'm not usually for this type of government involvement in peoples lives, but in certain cases, where the people are unable, or unwilling to do it for themselves, they need "encouragement" from the court.
If it was involving an adult, I'd tell the court to keep it's nose out of it. But, with a 13 year old boy, someone has to make reasonable decisions.
And, this mother has shown she won't do that.

$1 says the kid will be dead from the burn and poison treatment anyway. Not sure why the parents are being forced to torture their child with "traditional" cancer treatment that has only a marginal effectiveness rate.
I know plenty of people who have had this same cancer, went through all of the prescribed treatment, died anyway! Oh and while they were going through the treatment, their quality of life was horrendous since they were bald and vomiting the whole time.....
Keep your laws OFF my body thank you very much!

Your post is reasonable, completely thought out without any emotional coloring, and well articulated. A breath of fresh air in the PP comments section.

I'd like to know why the kid cannot read at such an advanced age.

The learning disability excuse is BS, these parents have failed this child on many levels and he should be heavily supervised so he does not turn out to be huge burden on the state for the rest of his life.

as an adult, you have the right to refuse treatment for yourself, not your kid. plain and simple. in fact, you are required by law to take care of your child's needs. that is why the courts are involved. also, your friends may have had the cancer caught too late and the chemo was a last ditch effort to stop it. this kid had his caught early.

I think they should repay the court and state for the costs of the court overseeing this and then they can go forward. As to the "burn and poison" folks, I seriously doubt you know the difference between Hodgkins, non-hodgkins or even leukemia. You are opinionated, however. These tumors usually respond well to the mandated treatment, he did not die from suffocation, which he would have from the mediastinal tumor compressing his airway. This is why we protect children from dingbat parents and Ena, Cary and IrishMN, who clearly like displaying their ignorance!

You missed the mark on one point here, Ottermann: The court needs to stay involved until he can make these decisions for himself, not simply until he's cancer-free. In light of the news that he cannot read, that probably means he'll be AT LEAST 18.
His parents have demonstrated that they aren't responsible enough to (or capable?)arrange for proper health treatment for the kid.

It is really disheartening to hear your view point. The founding fathers of our country must be rolling in their graves.

Whoa wait a minute here. I agree with you to a certain degree. This is cancer in a 13 year old. As most of us know, cancer doesn't sleep. He is not in the clear yet. How would you feel if they were physically abusing him?

Wow! Using some BIG words there...hate to inform you there "Not as delusional," there is a state LAW that the parents have to get some kind of medical care in cases like his. No, the court's role shouldn't end in this case until 5 years of him being in remission has passed.
