The writer of this excellent column is to be commended for powerfully making two key points about the FDA ban of CFC albuterol (and eventually, all CFC MDIs) that have, so far, been overlooked by the rest of the media:
1) CFC MDI emissions do NOT harm the ozone layer- they are much too small to effect the natural creation and destruction of stratospheric ozone. The popular idea that CFC inhalers are being banned to save the ozone layer is a LIE successfully spread (so far) by the EPA and the FDA. Dr. Leslie Hendeles, a major proponent of HFA inhalers, by the way, agrees with other scientists that CFC MDI emissions do NOT harm the ozone layer.
2) The new 'environment-friendly' HFA replacement inhalers are MUCH less safe and effective for MANY pulmonary patients than the CFC MDIs are. Patients are going to fight this CFC ihaler ban NOT because they object to the "taste" or the "mouth feel" of HFA inhalers or any of the other idiotic 'problems' that are spoon-fed to the media by the FDA and their numerous spokesthings- but because their lives and safety have been compromised by this absolutely moronic ban, which is an example of environmental extremism run amok.
To be clear, we applaud the Montreal Protocol's success in ridding the planet of annual ozone-depleting substance emissions of 1.2 million tons/year in the peak year of 1987. But it's a shame that common sense did not prevail, and that the Montreal Protocol did not preserve a fraction of 1% of those peak 1987 levels of CFCs to protect the health and safety of the world's pulmonary patients.
