Can lung cancer look like pneumonia on x-rays?

I had x-rays taken on Friday, and the doctor spent a long time looking at them. He kept taking out a ruler and measuring what he was seeing on them, which made me rather nervous! He said it may be scarring or pneumonia. I've had pneumonia quite a few times, but do not have any symptoms now.

He gave me some strong antibiotics to take, along with Mucinex...and I go back next Friday for another x-ray. Of course, I've decided to start worrying between now and then.

I am in my late 50's. I went for a general physical, since I haven't had one in awhile. All my lab results looked good. If I do have lung cancer, would it show up in some of the labwork results? Wouldn't I cough up blood when I do cough?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Marcie,
I would strongly suggest you to get CT scan done immediatelly. My husband had the same thing, it looked like pneumonia and he just wasted time taking antibiotics and getting another X-rays which can only show that you do have something in your lung, but don't show what exactly it is. My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer, he's been smoking for 40 years. It may sound scary for you, but you better find out it early, when it's not spreaded yet.
Also do not stick to one doctor, get the second opinion, it always helps.
I wish you the best and remember that cancer is curable, I've seen people with 10 - 15 year cancer history and they doing well!

Oh, Val...thank you so much for your response, and your advice. I plan to see another doctor this week. I wonder if I can get in to see a pulmonary specialist without a referral?
I spent plenty of years living with smokers, although I never smoked...unless you count the times in my teen years when I was trying to be bad!
I have heard so much recently about nonsmokers turning up with lung cancer.

My dad who is 52 yrs. old has had headaches for the past 2 years that have not subsided, not for one single day. He's been seen by 7 doctors and been put on 7-8 different drugs basically experiementing with treatments for the headache. Just by chance one doctor sent him for a chest X-ray and they would have something else for his charts. They(because they were only focusing on the upper part of the chest) caught a tiny glimps of a mass and sent him the next day for a CT. He does have lung cancer and he's had a broncialscope last week and we are waiting for results. The PET scan is next and that will help with staging and what treatments options are available. Does anyone have any experience in this area that can lend any first hand knowledge? Thanks ;-)

Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer in an ER, went through tests, and basically lived in hell. Only after a lung biopsy was it determined that I likely have pneumonia for which I am now being treated. I have spots in my lungs, both sides. I think the spots on my lungs were challenging to read, white, with halos or something. Told my PCP it sounded celestial. So, ask for further testing If you have a spot, have it checked out more thoroughly. You have a right to this!

Hi. I've just been to the doctor for severe pain in my lung. I have been battling with pneumonia for months. Anyway the doc said my blood results and xrays were fine. She said the pain was probably due to a muscle strain around my lung. Once I got home I had a look at the xray and saw 6 spots on my lungs, approx 6mm each. Do you think I should pursue this?

To all of you out there have the spots checked with a CT scan and a follow up PET scan .. Its you life we are talking about.. survival rate is very low with Lung Cancer.. If we would have did more testing on my mom we would have had options. They seen a spot 4 years ago and said it was old scaring.. last year the finally did the CT and Pet scan... She died 6 month later with no treatment ... I have lost a grandmother and mother to lung cancer . 1 was a smoker and 1 was not...18 month later here I sit.. x ray in hand ..white spots ... smoker... and a fighter.... God be with us ALL.. Lets fight it>>>

I have Sarcoid, and I've had chest xrays done and my doctor said it wasn't the sarcoid any more because it was gone...could be pnemonia or emphysema. But she didn't say which. And she still hasn't said anything. Anyway, Im an on and off smoker, on when I'm depressed off when I'm not. I also have a herniated disk in my back...which feels ok right now. But I notice now my upper back on the left feels like a pulled a muscle. I don't know if it's the Sarcoid, Emphysema or pneumonia. But I'm frightened, and I need a good dr. Because mine is a quack. Any suggestions?

I lost my mom to lung cancer in 2004. Before she died the doctor kept telling her that she had pneumonia and kept giving her antibiotics and prednisone however she always got a pneumonia shot. Now my husband who is 60 is having a lot of lung problems - COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, previously lung embolisms, punctured lower lobes that never were inflated, asthma, chest pain, shortness of breath, and dry cough. He keeps getting sick all the time and has to call the doctor to get something and they put him on either prednisone or an antibiotic (just like my mom) but they hardly ever do any x-rays and when they do they say that they are the same as before. He has seen a pulmonologist who says that since his last pulse ox was ok that he is fine. But if he is without oxygen for 24 hours his pulse ox goes down to 90 or less and he turns colors. They say that there is something on his CT scans but they are not sure what it is but that is all. I personally have a gut feeling that he has cancer. His father died of lung cancer in 1988. We now have a new pulmonologist and I am hoping that he can find out something. He did a High Resolution CT scan on him. My heart goes out to all of you that have lost a loved one with cancer or that have cancer. God Bless...www.angel-hearts.org Marcella Gillum is my mom

My husband has been having this sever pain in the right side of his back and also the tip of his shoulder, both came on at the same time. He has a cough and had fever which is no longer there, probably because of the medication. He's been having this pain since the last 10 days now. He's now taken a chest X-Ray and the doctor says it is pneumonia, and there is no cancer, how could he tell from an X-Ray. My husband has been put on antibiotics and Panadene Forte for the pain. The pain is still there. And I am a bit concerned about the pain still lingering. I am hoping it is just pneumonia. Thank you for your time.

I went to the Hosptial on 11/12/08. I had a cough for like two weeks, they took exrays and said it was pneumonia. I was put on antibiotics, but still have the cough, it is a dry cough no cold no mucus. I also notice when I go for my walk everyday, I feel pain in my right shoulder, toward my lung area. I used to smoke, but haven"t smoke in five years. My husband died of lung cancer five years ago. I am not afraid of death. I am just frustrated when the doctors don't know what they are doing at times. Please give a opion on what I should do. Sign Christine

I have COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and I get pneumonia at the drop of the hat, but I had pneumonia in both lungs for over a month, staying in the hospital 7 days and then having to go back by ambulance because my oxygen dropped to 81 and the pain was horrible. I've been on strong antibiotics and predinsone for several weeks and have had 3 sets of xrays saying I still have pneumonia. I had ct scan last week and go to the dr. on Tues. I am still spitting up lots of blood. I feel really scared this time because the pain just doesn't go away.
