Hi all

Im 15 and have an under active thyroid. I really want to fly in the RAF but they have said no to me because of my thyroid problems. I was wondering are there any cures around for this problem?

Peter,
If you have an underactive thyroid, then your doctor must have talked to you about thyroid hormone replacemnt therapy. I have been taking my Synthroid medication for the past 14 years, and as long as you keep active with proper diet....hell, you might not even need medication...talk to your doctor if s/he is not giving you clear answers go to a specialist.
As far as i know, there is no cure for it...the thyriod gland simply gets slagish.
Good luck and stay positive.

Hi,
I am 54 year old and diabetic (1 tablet daily), I have recently been informed after a blood test that I am border line under active thyroid. I have been having palpitations for quite a few weeks and my bones ache all the time, can't sleep for more than a few hours and am tired all the time. I have been putting all these things down to menopause, but after reading about some of your symptoms, a lot of things seem to answer the puzzle, or am I just being slightly neurotic. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks
Pete

i have an underactive thyroid and i was on 125g of thyroxine a day, however i have joined weight watches in january this year and have lost over three stone.i had a yearly check up blood test recently to be told that my thyriod is now over active possibly because ive lost a lot of weight they said.i am just awaiting instructions to advise me what the right dose i should now be taking.so my advice would be make sure that you get regular yearly check ups because like me,you never never know when it could be out again.

I'm trying to find out more about underactive thyroids - Over two years ago my married feel apart we had no end of rows etc. After seprating from my husband he has been to the doctors and has been told he has an underactive thyroid he is on medication he is saying this is the reason for the arguments, he said he was always tried and could not be bothered to work at our married but did say he was doing overtime at weekends but was going to the gym as concerned about his weight. I do feel sorry for anyone with medical problems but is he using this as an excuse. As he used to go to football matches but not be bothered to go to relate!!!

Hi it is quite possible that you will be on the meds for life, and if you was to go away make sure you take enough of your meds with you. i think if you was to stop taking the thyroxine it would be a danger to you as you would probs put on weight and youll be at more of a risk of your thyroid getting worse. Hope this helped you

My name is Leslie and I am 28, at the age of 18 I was told I had an over active thyroid. I was given a radiation pill to shrink it. It work so well that know it is under active. I am on daily medicine for it. I have three children and have held many different jobs. At no point has having thyroid problems kept me from any job, however, my senior year in school my grades dropped from straight A's to C-F. My parent's thought I had problems, finally a doctor figured out that my problem was my thyroid. But,help did not come quick enough to help my grades and it cost me schoolarships to schools. Be thankful that you have gotten your problem under control now. Be glad to talk with you any time.

Myself, I am on Levothryoid and I was gaining lots of weight while maintaining a constant exercise routine and watch every thng I ate. My doctor concluded that my body was not taking a part of my medicine and converting it into the necessary componant to maintain a balanced weight. So he also put me on Cytomel, with normal eating and exercise I have been able to drop 20 pds. and keep them off. No Diet! That may not seem like a lot and I will never be back into my once were size, but after having three children, it seems like a blessing to me. I hope that this may help you.

I was put on a very low dosage of Synthroid years ago, and the doctor never told me why I was taking them. They told me to take it until it was gone. I thought I had an infection. Years later, I got another doctor and they told me I had hypothyroid and finally explained what it was. I have always been bad about taking pills, so they have never helped me. A couple of weeks ago, I stopped remembering to take my pills at all, and suddenly I am 23 lbs smaller than I was several months ago.

Does anyone know if it's possible that the reason I am loosing weight is because I am not taking the very low dosage she has me on? My old place used to check me every 3 months. My new doctor gave me enough for a year and sent me on my way.

Oh, P.S. Several people have said have your thyroid removed. My cousin's husband had his removed and even with diet and exercise he can't loose weight at all now. Be very careful having it removed!

Hi! my name is Peter. I am 28. I have been wondering if i have thyroid disorder. I have been diagnosed from the doctor of being stress. I feel sleepy all the time even i have 8 hours sleep, hair loss and have a lot of grey hair, coarse hair and dry skin. My blood test is normal only a bit high in cholesterol level. I've never tested it with thyriod hormone. I have panic attack from time to time and I look tried even in the morning and i feel like no fun at all whatever i do.

I need some help cause it's destroying my normal life with being tried all the time. Should i go and check my thyroid?

Thanks

Hi, Pete if you still come on this board, I was wondering did the RAF offer you any other roles? I'm thinking about joining one of the forces as medical staff but I don't know if they would say no straigh off. Feel free to get in contact with me.
