I urge GREAT caution, since this is a "breast cancer news" forum. Do NOT just go taking alternatives to deal with hot flashes without talking to your oncologist.

In fact a doctor could be disciplined for recommending an alternative that was tested on exactly 29 years. Pycnogenol has been around for decades, and no claim ever made by its manufacturer has ever lived up to true, disciplined and scientific scrutiny (and yes, I know the difference between independent research and research funded by drug companies. What people forget to look at is what hand the manufacturer had in research suggesting that THEIR product is either safe or effective).

That safety issue is important. Some alternatives demonstrated to have at least some small positive effect on hormone drops, such as evening primrose oil, have ALSO been shown to increase the risk of the breast cancer returning.

If you can, get a water bed. They have thermostats. When I entered menopause I lowered the temp on my side of the waterbed by FOUR degrees. That's a lot.

Look on line for "cooling scarves" and buy half a dozen. Put them in zip lock bags with a small amount of water and stash them in the refrigerator. I live in a hot climate (Florida). In the summer I often wear two -- one around my head and one around my neck, and I change them hourly. I keep them in the ice cooler on my boat. They make a huge difference.

AS I SAID -- do NOT just go taking alternatives without checking with your oncologist!

And Melanie -- this is NOT your personal free billboard. It's really classless to come into an area where people are fighting a life-threatening illness -- looking for customers. It's just wrong, wrong, wrong.

In fact, I would urge people, if they decide to try one of these products -- find another supplier, someone who doesn't come into such areas just to make money.

When hot flashes strike at night, they can be particularly bothersome. Oddly enough, sometimes you wake up because of the chill. During the flash, you kicked off the covers, and now that it has passed, you wake up cold with your pajamas and pillow damp. Welcome to night sweats.

Keeping a clean cotton Tee-shirt next to the bed to replace a damp top can help you get comfortably back to sleep without too much disruption. You may also want to keep an extra pillow with a cotton pillowcase handy so that you can switch pillows easily. It may add to the laundry, but sleeping on a damp pillow night after night can ruin the pillow.

Cotton is the best fabric for the T-shirt and pillowcase; it's more absorbent and more comfortable next to your skin. The "dry clean only" satins can wait a couple of years.
