Tanya, just drink nice ol clean water and while drinking water imagine the misery you have to go through all your life if you continue suffering from hives and you wouldn't gag.

I get severe outbreaks on my hands, swelling so I cannot make a fist. Doctors haven't been helpful at all. Not sure what causes it but I have managed to make it disappear for lengthy periods of time using the following: Let your hands soak in ocean (salt water) for a good 15 minutes. Use the sand to scrub your hands and let that salt water soak in. This works well for me (unfortunately I live 3 hours from the beach). The other thing that worked was soaking my hands in Kava for 10-15 minutes (did this for 2 days and the hives completely disappeared for a few months)- unfortunately Kava is difficult to buy in australia.

I am 45 years old, always been pretty healthy and got a severe outbreak all over my body last week, and have been itching like crazy, trying not to. Have been searching for remedies everything from changing your diet to the point of what can you eat? to don't exercise and try all sorts of ointments and pills.
Well am glad came across this forum, Sam your advice makes the most sense to me - and I have been drinking water religiously all day for last day or two trying to re hydrate and re-balance my body.
Sam, could you advise what foods you CAN eat, read a million you can't.

How can you get back to exercising with Hives? I found few times I tried to go back to Jogging, which I do 4-5x a week - the outbreak is more severe afterwards. Am sure the Summer heat contributes.
That makes sense to me, as you are completely dehyrdrating your body as you run, causing the outbreak.
This has been the most frustrating part for me actually, not being able to get back to my normal exercise routine.
Is the minute I start sweating going to cause another outbreak ? I was thinking what if I drank a lot of water before and during my run -would that be ok? I am almost afraid to try after I a had a major itch fest couple days ago when i tried.

I have something similar. Except I'm only 17. Whenever I get too warm, eat spicy food, excercise ect. I break out in hives. I have always had headaches through my life and felt quite tired and never had energy. I also drink lots of coffee and about 4 cans of cola a day. So I found this site and It made sense that Im probably chronicaly dehydrated. So for the past 4 days I have cut out all caffine and started drinking 2 litres of water a day. I have found my tolerence for heat has gone up. I can now sit in the sun without breaking out. I'm not sure whether it's my sweat thats causing my hives but I never get them on my armpits where I sweat constantly. AAnyway, I doubt it's a coincidence that they are improving as I am drinking more water. Drink 2 lires a day for a weak and then try going for a run.

I was diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency after suffering over 9 months with hives. Steroids, antihistamines quelled the symptoms for a while but they came back with a vengeance. Doc put me on a weekly dose of 50,000 unit Vit. D for 2 months and hives never returned. What a relief.

Sam, could you advise what foods you CAN eat, read a million you can't. Hello Michael, Your questions about what foods can be eaten is difficult to answer because it vary from people to people. Although seafoods, milk ,nuts , eggs and in non-foods NSAIDs non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs on the top of list but not necessarily a cause of hives in everyone,so the best way is to listen to your body it will guide you on your way to recovery ,when you eat something and your hives are bad then stop eating it. Also you must know that a chronically dehydrated body takes time to be hydrated and it is not the matter of days or weeks but probably months so the patience and persistence is the key. Histamines have a role for water management inside our bodies so any activity which depletes your body of water will cause more histamine release and this includes exercise thus causing more hives, but it will improve with time as you continue drinking enough water. Vitamin D is discussed a lot in various hives forums and i think it is worth a try to take extra vitamin D along with water therapy and see results but remember water is important even with intake of vitamins or medications as it helps metabolize them properly and without water they will be non effective. wish you good luck Sam

I broke up in hives 4 weeks ago and they keep getting worse. I have had prednisone shots, prednisome pack, Zyrtec, Alegra, special creams and nothing seems to help. I was tested by an Alergist and I have several allergies by I have been avoiding all of them for a month as well. The blood work showed nothing serious but a deficency in Vitamin D and B12. I got a B12 shot and Iam taking supplements. All the vitamins D that the dr sent me contain soy and I just tested positive for Soy allergies. I stumbled with this website last night and I started the water treatment. I normally only drink water, no alcohol, a cup of coffe a day which I stopped. I usually drink ater but not 8 cups. I am trying anything I can. I need to sleep beside Iam going in a cruise in a week and I'm hoping to feel beetter by then.
Any other suggestions??????

I only break out in hives overnight. They are my constant companions from the minute I wake up until about mid-day when they often fade out and stop itching. I've been told by an allergist that it is the pressure on your body that makes them pop out when you are sleeping. Is anyone else finding that to be the case too?(If only I could sleep standing up!!) The water therapy has been helping me, however, after a 4 month period of drinking over 64 oz. each day, they still continue to thrive. How long should a person expect to see complete recovery from them? My only wish is that I can feel "normal" again. It's been 15 months since I've felt that way. I am directing this to Sam in particular. He is always so helpful.

Well, what can I say! had serious welts all over my arms, sometimes the hives as small then grow in size and join forces. The right side of my face is swollen feels a little like when you have been to the Dentist. I have been now advised to up me Meds and been put on a drug for my Thyroid and taking Antihistamines, Iron and B12. Also Doctor wants me to go on Doxepin for its Antihistamine properties. Why can they not just extract the Antihistamine from the Doxepin? This drug is used for Depression which I do not have and also for its Antihistamine. I am officially rattling. Instead of them testing a little more at the hospital there answer is try more drugs which in themselves cause more harm than good. Suffering with Urticaria and Angeodema 18 months now could be down to several triggers, I had had the 3 in one flu jab, you know the one. Government said there would be an epidemic if you did not have it. Wondered if anyone else can think back to the first time they encountered hives and what you think the TRIGGER may of been would make interesting chat and perhaps may find a common denominator is all of this. Well the good news is my right side of the face looks 15 years younger LOL. Have a good day and hopefully hive free. P.S. Thank you Sam for this Site the best one around x

Vicki, 4 months is long enough , it may also be something else, night outbreaks of hives may signal stomach problems specially silent infection by H.pylori.candida etc, have you ever checked for H.pylori, Do you use any meds? hows your overall health, do you drink? do you feel stressed ? do you get enough sleep ? what foods you eat? If hives caused by either chronic infections ( specially viral ones) or inflammation it may take long time to recover and it is important to get a health check and treat those underlying issues ASAP. You need to get blood test. CBC must include following. 1. White blood count 2. Lymphocyte count. 3. CRP test ( c-ractive protein) for inflammation. could give some hint about your health. 4. H.pylori 5. Vitamin D deficiency.( has been discussed a lot in various hives forums )nothing wrong taking some extra vitamin D if you are deficient. 6.The immunoglobulin E (IgE) test 7. Thyroid function test. once i have more info about your condition i will be able to give you my thoughts.in the meantime continue with water. Sam

Just watched the Documentary ''Fat, sick and nearly dead'' where a guy had Chronic Urticaria and gained 100lbs due to steroid treatment. He goes on a 60 day juice fast of only friut and veg. After that he commits to a healthy life. Looses 89lbs, comes off all medication and no longer suffers from his hives. He also meets another guy with the same thing and he ends up getting cured too. I talked to him on twitter toda and he has been hives free 4 years and lost 205lbs

I've been battling hives for about 4 years now. I've taken every type if medication and have had good days and bad. I decided about a year ago to stop all the meds except one Zyrtec daily. It helps with the itchiness. I am no better or worse, and I figured my body didn't need a thousand things to suppress the hives. So, recently I was told I have vitamin d deficiency. I'm on a vitamin kick right now, feeling like stress is probably taking away some of those vitamins from my system. I'm drinking water and taking vitamins and I hope and pray that it helps. Hives are so emotionally hard to live with as well as physically. My friends and family have no idea how much I suffer. When I feel the tell tale sign of an approaching eye or lip outbreak I always cancel plans- this frustrates people, but I'm ashamed of the hives and don't like to be seen when they take over. Hopefully I win this battle one day. Good luck to all of you out there!! I fully understand this struggle!!

Sam,
I have been doing the 'water-routine' for 5 weeks now and I have seen some minor improvemens, although I still get hives every day. Overall, I'd say it has gotten better, as the outbeaks are less intense, but some days are still worse than others.
Is it normal that one day I have less of an outbreak and then 2 days later the outbreak would be a little worse again?
I'm currently taking 1 Allegra pill in the morning, and every once in a while I add 1 pill of Zyrtec at night. I'm also taking a multivitamin once a day, as well as additional Vitamine D3.
I will keep drinking the amounts that I have been drinking and I hope that after another 5 weeks, the hives will be gone completely. I will keep everyone posted!
Thanks for your adice again!

Dear all,
If you do not find relief after 2-3 months of water therapy then consider following and do some investigation.
1. Continuous exposure to some foods and non foods items which are causing allergy, you need to make a list/diary of what you do and eat , some allergic reactions start after 48hrs to 72hrs of exposure. This is something very important to remember and doctors are not going to tell you.
2. Chronic Viral or bacterial infections / silent infections such as H.pylori./flu/colds or chronic inflamation. A blood /urine test will help detect theses conditions.
3. Other undiagnosed health issues.
