I am having the same problem from ceramic hip replacement done about 2 yrs. ago. Just started squeaking the past few months. I haven't seen my dr. about it yet. Anyone have more updates on this problem and solutions (other than revisions)? |

I had my ceramic on ceramic replacement done in Nov. 2004. A small squeak started early 2006. It developed into a loud squeak with vibration (the rusty gate hinge). My surgeon said most squeaks go away. After six weeks and the squeak worsting we opted for the Synvisc injection (ouch!). No squeaks for nine days. Now it is back and getting worse by the day. I go
back to the doctor Aug. 2. |

hey John, just to ad lib; I had a ceramic on ceramic hip replacement about 2 and 1/2 yrs. ago. Not only sounds like an old door hinge from a horror movie there is so much PAIN I can barely stand it!!! I cannot walk at all with out Narcotic pain pills and anti-inflammatory pills. Just wanted to let you know apparently ceramic on ceramic may not be any better. Looking for a new orthopedic dr. considering going to one of the Mayo Clinics. Good Luck p.s. My "rusty-hinge" sound started about 6 mos. before extreme pain and inflammation. Hope someone does do some type of class action law suit!!!!!!!!

So far this topic here is the only discussion I have found of this problem. It sounds like I should make a web site devoted to the issue and find out how many people are really affected. How does SqueakyHip.com sound? |

Add me to the list, had Bilateral done 11/03, squeaking started about a month ago in the right hip, left is still fine.
Saw my Dr. about it and he read the same article mentioned here but that was the first he heard about it, basicly told me that unless it's painful that it's better to live with it then to rip it out and put in a new one... |

I came accross this website while searching for reasons why my hips have squeaked 3 times during the 5 years since I first had my left hip resurfaced. The right was done 2 years ago.
Both my hips are metal on metal resurfacing. They have only squeaked in 2 situations. The right hip squeaked about 3 days after the resurfacing operation on it. The left hip has squeaked twice during hill walking in the Welsh mountains when the leg was raised higher then in normal walking when ascending steep banks, paths etc. No associated pain, but quite an unnerving experience. I've assumed that the cause must be lack of natural lubrication,(i.e. synovial fluid), brought on by tiredness possibly? I'm very interested to know why ceramic on ceramic seems to be feature in this subject so much. Is it the device of choice these days? |

Debbie, I would like to suggest Midwest Orthopedics in the Chicago area. I had a hip replacement in 1997 and due to product failure I have had 2 revisions. The second revision was done last summer (July 2005) at Rush Medical Center in Chicago. The surgeons were great. I hope you find someone that can get you back to walking without pain. Hi All!
Had my right hip replaced 09/05 at the Cleveland Clinic. Squeaking started in 06/06, and it's really not funny anymore! I'm 55. Just saw my surgeon,(8/10/06), and he said- I'm not alone and he'd put my name on his "squeaky hip list". I now need the left hip replaced and he promised me that it would not squeak. There must be something better out there.(?) My squeak comes and goes- why?? is it the weather? I have had a few rusty hinge squeaks, but mostly, they are small mouse squeaks with no pain. Neil O- Thanks for starting this forum!! When I googled squeaky hip, this was on the top. Has anyone seen a lawyer? We need to stick together and share information! |

I had a full hip replacement in 11/05, right hip, ceramic on ceramic. I am 32 (had osteonecrosis) so I was recommended a ceramic hip for longevity reasons.
Over the weekend (08/12/06) I developed the small squeak, and an occasional louder one (with slight vibration). This is accompanied by a soreness in the joint. The squeak happens when I walk (only when the joint is weighted). I do know that after the surgery the right leg is slightly longer than the left (0.75") and I have a slightly tilted pelvis because of it. The surgeon who performed it says all is well and I need to live with it. I am getting a second opinion. |

I had total hip replacement of my left hip in Aug. of 2005, opting for a ceramic on ceramic combination. In July of this year (2006) I developed a squeak. It occurs mostly when I take the first step when going up a set of stairs if I lead with my left (replaced) hip. It is quite loud and can be heard by anyone nearby. I do not have any pain associated with it so far, but it is really embarrassing. No one told me about this possible "sound effect" when I chose ceramic. I am only 51 years old and will probably have to have the other hip done in a year or so. This ceramic hip was supposed to last longer than other materials, but now I don't know if I want the other hip to be ceramic if squeaking is a common problem. I am trying to train myself to lead with my right foot when ascending stairs, but a lifetime of habit is hard to change.
I think this squeaking issue is a lot more common than the manufacturer will admit. |

I have had two total hip replacements and am 37 years old. My first was at 34. I was told the ceramics would be best for me considering my age. To whomever took advise from their Ortho MD that this "sqeaking will eventually go away" is in for a rude awakening. My squeaking has now evolved into an all out scream and accompanied by a grinding noise -usually when bending on any level. Like everyone else was told that my only hope is to endure surgery AGAIN. Can ANYone tell me if someone out there has taken legal steps or how I can jump on that bandwagon? I cannot miss another four months of work and my insurance company already said they wouldn't cover a second surgery because of sqeaking. I dont have an extra 100K sitting around nor do I have the patience to tolerate this for another 30 years. Please email me if there is anyone out there that has any advise or is in the same boat. Thanks!

Did I mention the vibrations from the louder sqeaking is very much like a brief electrical shock?

I am three years into my hip replacement and have had problems with the ceramic hip. I do not have squeaks--I have solid clunks. Very loud and noticable at times. I mean a clunk that comes with each step. Also, I have the grinding upon turning or standing with my weight on that leg. Obviously something not to do! Also a few months after the original surgery, the iliotibial band (muscle covering the insision) split and the leg looked "caved in" along the insision. The surgeon said he would repair it and sew it tighter. Well, another surgery and a few months later the same thing happened. I also began having the clunking sound around that time and since then it has only gotten worse. I am a "young"60--very active my weight is appropriate for my height and I feel so depressed over this whole thing. I go back to the surgeon next week. He is talking about replaceing the liner in the joint and having me see a surgeon in Atlanta. Any ideas out there????????

I had a Wright Medical ceramic-on-ceramic left hip replacement almost 3 years ago. I have the squeaking, grinding and loud clicking referred to in many of the posts to this site. I am scheduled to undergo a revision at Mayo Clinic on 11/3. My surgeon there is not sure of the cause, and has only offered that the components may be slightly out of alignment. I'm not sure what it is, but very concerned that a revision will solve the problem. I'm interested as well in any legal action that may be underway.

What is your doctor going to do in his "revision" of the hip joint? Mine is saying that replacing the ceramic liner of the ball joint with a propleyne liner will solve the problem. I just don't feel real positive and would like to know what other drs. are doing. Also interested in legal aspects as this will be my third surgery on this hip.
