I had hernia surgery about four months ago. It was repaired with mesh screen. I don't have any pain, but I still have numbness below the scar area. My surgeon said it would eventually go away but my primary doctor says it may not. Anyone else with this problem?

I am a little surprised you would complain of numbness. Many of the people here are dealing with servere pain. Go to the North Penn Discussion Board by Dr. Goodyear and read some of the posts.

My hernia op was nearly two weeks ago and the only thing I still suffer with is the numbness but I'm not really sure what this is.
Is it to combat other pain or is it an anasthetic that has yet to wear off?.

The hernia was on the right hand side just above the groin and the numbness is in my right thigh. I'm not particularly noticing it getting any better and after walking it can sometimes get painful.

Is there anyone who still suffers from this or how long did other people's numbness last for?.

Me, too! After inguinal surgery (double hernia) 2 weeks ago, still the numbness in the thigh. From what I have been told, not serious. However it is annoying! Accupuncture relieves it for a day or two.... Good luck!

I had open inguinal hernia surgery one week ago and have numbness right below the incision. I also thought I would be back to work by now but I have yet to be able to wear underwear much less jeans. My testicle on the same side has become about 5 times it's normal size so that is painful as well. How long until I get back to some type of normalcy?

Did numbness go away for anyone? Just had hernia surgery last week and area below incision is very numb -- do not have any feeling there except almost a tingling -- very annoying. Please tell me it gets better.

Yep numbness here too, less than two weeks after the op, would be good if someone could post up from the January times to let us know if they are now back to normal feeling ?

I am a general surgeon. Your numbness is most likely due to a ligated ilioinguinal or iliohypogastric nerve. They are senosory nerves located around the spermatic chord. Some surgeons, including myself, will routinely section or cut the nerves in an effort to try to prevent nerve entrapment syndrome which affects roughly 30% of all hernia repairs. Most patients are pain free in 6 weeks but for some the pain and discomfort are very debilitating. The nerves are sensory, so they don't effect muscle strength. They have nothing to do with sexual function. Most randomized studies on chronic nerve pain show no difference in pain scores after 3 weeks or so. There is a slightly decreased incidence of short term pain. The going theory is that the nerves get caught up in the inflammatory process associated with the mesh leading to nerve entrapment and chronic pain. Some surgeons will selectively cut the nerves dependending on where they are in association with the mesh. Typical human healing is 6-8 wks. If you have not regained sensation by then, it is likely you will not.

One week out from surgery, I assume that you are still taking narcotics for post operative pain. Constipation is a common problem for patients who are appropriately taking post operative narcotics such as Lortab, Vicodin, etc. Try to wean yourself from the narcotics as tolerated. If possible, transition to a NSAID and / or Tylenol if you have no contraindications to those medications. Be careful not to use tylenol or any other acetaminaphen containing medications while on post operative narcotics as most will contain some form of acetaminaphen. As for the constipation, all good things start with hydration. Strive for a clear or light yellow urine stream. If you're still having difficulty with constipation, then stool softeners while on a post operative narcotic are the way to go. As you get further away from your surgery, your pain requirments and thus your narcotics use should lessen, meaning your stools should soften. Your surgeon and/or his/her office should be available to answer any similar questions. Good luck.

Dear Doc

I had a lap surgery to replace mesh that retracted and folded up. However,
this resulted in adhesions and I have had about 3 surgeries over the last couple of years to remove them. I think we finally got the adhesions under control until I felt the mesh move. I could feel some sharpness like the staples, etc. This gradually went away but gradually, I could feel the adhesions come back. I think the adhesions came back as a result of disruption of the area when the mesh moved. I am thinking about having another adhesion surgery and putting in a laparoscopic adhesion barrier.
What do you think? P.S. If the mesh has retracted again it would be replaced with Parietex.

i had very large left ingunial hernia repair in aug. 07. it was emergency surgery, er doc suspected strangulation because of the pain i had. injury occurred nov 99. i had no insurance so i ignored for years. around may 07 pain and size of the hernia increased. it looked like i had a softball in my scrotum. operation was open with stitches to repair the tear and mesh patch. im still in constant pain. ive had mri ct ultrasound all of which show nothing wrong. after incurring 20+ thousand for the surgery hospital stay all the tests, i decided i had enough and just dealt with the pain. several nerve blockers were tried but nothing worked. its been a year since ive last seen a doc about this.the pain is nowunbearable i hope nobody else has to go through this hell

I also had inguinal surgery back in 2007 and I'm still numb around the incision area and I'm also getting some pain but it's only every once in a while. I went to my doctor to see why and she said I may have had another hernia caused by the hernia repair? I don't understand but I went to the surgeon she recommended and the surgeon couldn't find anything. I'm constantly feeling like my muscles are straining when I move even just a little. My hernia repair doesn't even feel like it was repaired and it feels like the mesh has just dissolved, but I know it can't. It's painful and like Anthony, I hope nobody else has to go through this.

You seem to be suffering from chronic nerve pain associated with the hernia repair. You need to discuss your case with the surgeon who performed your original surgery. He or she will know details of your original procedure. You may benefit from a re-exploration with sectioning of your ilioninguinal / iliohypogastric nerve. A nerve block may provide some temporary relief. A pain management specialist may be able to locate the offending nerves and kill them.

I am a female and had an open left inguinal hernia repair on Oct 8th. I have noticed some numbness underneath the incision and I am hopeful this will resolve with time. I also have the Parietex mesh. I'm still quite sore, but it's interesting reading all of your post-surgery accounts. Thanks for sharing.

Doc, I'm a 25 y/o woman. I had an inguinal hernia on my left side. I'm too thin for the mesh, so they used my muscle tissue to repair it and one of my veins had been "cut" accidentally and they tied it off. The surgery was a month ago, and the numbness is still very much there. Any thoughts of when it will go away, if at all?
Thanks

I had open inguinal hernia surgery on the left side in July '08 and still have numbness just below the incision. Switching from boxers to briefs actually helped with discomfort and eliminated the swelling I was getting in the left testicle.
Six weeks after surgery I was back to my normal activities including the gym and running.
Also, I had very little pain after my surgery needing nothing stronger than Advil or Aleve.
Good luck to you all.
