how do you know if your ulcer is gone?

You can do a barrium swallow. Its a chalk like substance you drink (and tastes foul) and a number of xrays are done which can see the chalk and ulcers if they are present.

But endoscopy is easily the best way to go. You get a good understanding of any gastritis, damage and ulcers that exist.
