I've had an hysterectomy and total tyhroidectomy op 6 and 5 months respectively, which I haven't reovered from as yet. My voice and the ability to swallow was affected after thyroid op and also pulled some muscles in my tummy, back and neck which I am physio for.

My question is can feel the muscles are scare tissue stretching in the front my neck, I'm not sure which it is. Has anyone got or had this problem if so is it common and how long does it take to heal?

Hey, Maria, I don't know if you'll see this. I'm two years postthyroidectomy and my throat muscles are back to normal. Stretch them gently by letting your head tilt back, if you like. Good luck. :)

Hello Maria, I had a sub total thryroidectomy at the end of January, I "feel" my muscles now and again, but on the whole they are fine. My voice came back after 2 weeks, I do have a reactive node, which hopefully will settle eventually. I am now having a problem with weight gain even though I'm on 175mcg daily, don't know what to do about that, anyone have any ideas?

I had mine done 12/23/08. I have felt like something was in my throat until a few weeks ago. I like to sing in church and my throat felt so restricted and tight I couldn't plus I have some voice issues. My neck swells when I am extremely tired and I sometimes still have the sensation like something is stuck in my throat but it has improved and I wanted to encourage you. I still have other issues with weight and exhaustion.

Hi Leanne,
I am 6 weeks post total and feel like rubbish! I have never been one to take a nap and now all I want to do is sleep. I went back to work 3 weeks ago but cut my hours from 40 to 30 a week, I get home from work at 2pm and need 2-4 hours sleep and simply have no choice about it. I get up for a couple of hours in the evening and go back to bed by 8;30pm for a full 9 hours sleep. My life is literally dictated by feeling exhausted all the time and I'ce always been go go go..... partly due to being hyper. Nonetheless the depression is beginning to set in and I am wondering if I will ever be able to get thru a full day again. Hope yours is improving so I have a little light at the end of this very dark tunnel.

I had a partial thyroidectomy in May 2007. All follows fine. One year later I started developing a lump/knot in the center of my neck that covers area of incision, this occurs every 3-4 months. t The lump/knot is about size of hard boiled egg, red and painful to the touch, feels like I swallowed a jaw breaker & got stuck (tightening in that area. It last 2 days then disappears. Todate (2 years later) this is still occurring and Dr's can't figure out why. Is anyone having or had this problem.

Very frustreated

I had a full thyroidectomy 8 months ago and I have a problem with always feeling like something is in my throat, like flem or something. I constantly drink water to rid the feeling for just a moment. I haven't had any weight problems luckilly, but I am a lot more lazy!! I can drink a 5 hour energy and do stuff, but I'm sure that's not good for me.

I had thyroid cancer 3yrs ago at the age of 23 and had to go through 2 surgeries and two I-131 radiation treatments. I felt bad almost everyday for the first year after my surgery. I was taking the generic synthroid and my levels were always normal so my doc wouldn't change my meds. I finally convinced my doc to put me on name brand synthroid, which helped a lot, but I still felt tired all the time. I have been on Cytomel (T3) and Synthroid (T4) combination therapy for almost 6 months now and I feel SO much better. I still need 8 - 10 hrs of sleep, but I don't need naps anymore and I have energy now. I also take St Johns Wart for the mood swings and depression and it helps me and it better than being on an anti-depressant. There are a lot of things that the docs don't tell you like you might need to take an iron and/or calcium supplement. You can not take these supplements with thyroid meds so I take my thyroid meds in the morning, multi-vitamin 4 - 6 hrs later, calcium a few hrs after that, and iron at night. I take meds and supplements all day, but it's worth it because I finally have a life again! I have recently found out that my B12 is low, not sure if that its related to thyroid. I hope this helps!

I had a total thyroidectomy in march.Tired for a few weeks and voice was weak but now fully recovered and feel really good. Plenty of energy and no problems. Only point of this post is to reassure anyone waiting for this op that most people don't have any issues so don't worry too much.

I had a partial thyroidectomy a couple of weeks ago. The operation went really well and I am pleased I finally went through with my decision. It was elective surgery following a nodule being found on my thyroid. The hospital were great and I now am on the road to recovery. The main thing to remember is to follow the doctors/hospitals instructions. If you feel unwell, go back. Keep going back. Your health is everything. I am scheduled to go back in a week or so and I will mention I feel more tired, and a little depressed. I have just put this down to post op because everything else appears fine. I am now jogging again everyday, power walking, eating well and my weight is the same. So please take the positive from the negative. It does get better.

I had a total thyroidectomy in March 2010; and overall have felt much better. I have more energy, and have lost 10 pounds. My diet is healthy as I also have type 2 diabetes. I don't regret the surgery.
The only problem I am having is a sharp tightness in the back of my neck and head.
I am wondering if others have experienced this. It bothers me mostly at night when I awake and move my position. Anyone else experience this?
