If that nurse refused to answer, that's the same thing as saying yes. Whatever they paid to settle, it's cheap compared to what a jury would have done to them.

The woman most likely got the infection at the hospital. I suppose if you had to get your limbs amputated, you would just say "That's O.K. Mistakes happen." There are frivolous lawsuits out there. This wasn't one of them.

In case you are unaware during the child birth process the doctor does make incisions so if they found the infection inside her then it probably started during the child birth process at the hospital.. Whatever the settlement was it wasn't enough for this young woman who can never hold her children in her arms or walk with them .. From your comments I can only hope this happens to a female in your family then come back and let's see what you do.. |

QUOTE FROM STORY::
The day after that, doctors performed exploratory surgery and discovered gangrene in her belly. ********** This almost sounds like the 'after birth' was never removed after they delivered her baby & that started this infection.. |

Actually, since the facts of the case are being kept secret, there is no way of knowing what really happened. No matter how it happened, or who's fault it is, let's just say a prayer for this poor woman and her family!

It does not get more awful than this. If you can't find it in your heart to grieve for the family, then keep your pinheaded comments to yourself.

You are an idiot and don't deserve to be a US citizen. Why such hateful comments? Don't bother trying to explain. |

The article doesn't mention anything about a doctor being present at the birth--only a nurse and midwife. If there had been a doctor, would s/he have recognized the symptoms of this infection? Or, as someone else speculated, did this infection start in the hospital? I don't know how long she was there, but it seems like that's awfully fast for an infection to set in.

Nothing will give this woman her legs or her arms back. I am sooooooooo glad that hospital finally paid her.
"But the nurse, when questioned under oath, had refused to answer if she knew Mejia had an infection and, when caring for her, if she knew how to recognize symptoms of flesh-eating bacterial infection" - COME ON!!!! they deserved a lawsuit. This is someone's life they ruined!!!!! |

Accept Defeat - she's not an illegal immigrant you moron.

Very funny. You should have your own radio show. |

Hospitals are only about money, and not much on cleanlyness or hygiene. Now the tax payers are stuck with another law suit payout. How many millions? Take it out of the hospital boards paychecks, they take in millions yearly. Just like the woman who runs the central florida blood bank, her paycheck is somewhere around a quarter of a million a year. What a blood sucker.

---------- This type of infection spreads very quickly so she may have contracted it while at the hospital. There have been large numbers of infections with this bacteria and MRSA that are complications of hospitalization. The bacteria are very difficult to eradicate and the resulting infections difficult to treat because of resistence to antibiotics - the result of overuse of antibiotics, especially now that pharmacies are giving medication for free! The actions of the midwife are very disturbing - especially in light of the push to use "physician extenders" to cut costs. This may be our future with all the hype about health care reform. |

LMAO
|

True. If the health care is government run you may never see an actual MD. again.Those who need medical care and need it RIGHT AWAY will have to pay for it themselves and go to Switzerland. |
||||
|
Why didn't her husband get a sizeable chunk of $ or did I miss that? Her children received a settlement. I hope it puts the midwife & nurse out of business. Anyone who works in the medical field should be able to recognize symptoms of infection.
|
||||
You are as disgraceful as the other poster. Be careful what you hope for. |
||||
I don't think it could have become that infected in that short amount of time. jmo |
