30 years old with ED

Hello all, I've been dealing with ED for some time now, it's been going on for a good while, but seems to be getting worse recently. My girlfriend just left me because of it which sucks but I'd rather get this fixed than feel sorry for myself about that. I recently went to a urologist who said the problem could be caused by excessive masterbation, or the fact that I have been a smoker since I was 18. Not a heavy smoker by any means, but he said it doesn't really matter. I was trying not to be nervous and was as honest as possible. He did some blood work which I haven't gotten results for yet, and prescribed viagra, which I'm hesitant to take because I don't think it's safe. It forces your erections to occur, is that really a good thing? Seems like it would do damage long term.

Basically, when I do manage to get an erection it's what the doctor called a lazy erection. I can't penetrate with it long enough to have sex. I've read that this is probably due to cardiovascular reasons, so I guess my question is: If I quit smoking, which I already have, two weeks ago... will this get better over time if I do cardio stuff like working out and maybe take some argenine? Am I stuck with a limp dick forever unless I take viagra? I'll ask the urologist next time I go, but was wondering what info other people dealing with this might have.

What do people recommend for treatment that is safe or that you have personally found effective?

hey cold fire. i'm gutted for you about your girlfriend. as a woman we do tend to take these things so personally - like we SHOULD be able to get our men hard so theres a lot of our insecurity tied up with it so try not to blame yourself. you sound very strong in terms of you not wanting to wallow in it and you obviously want to get it sorted. jesus the doctors don't sound very understanding - sounds like they're saying "sorry mate - but it' your own fault you've got this" - wa*nkers !! no wonder men never go to see doctors.
do you feel like it's psychological - have a look at my post to 'ED for my whole life' cos theres some suggestions in there.
if you feel the viagra thing is wrong for you then don't take it yet - it can be a last resort. but explore other options. you will find a loving sensitive girl who can work with you to get through this.

i'd say don't panic - obviously do all you can - try and get fit and and eat healthy and do everything you can to help. theres some natural herbal pills called rio amazon catuaba which also naturally help increase your libido.
otherwise as i've said in my other post get yourself to a sexual psychologist.
i wish you all the luck in teh world. try to sty strong and as tough as it is try not to worry - i know thats easy for me to say as a woman but the more you panic and give it energy thinking about it the more its going to happen.

Second of all, how old are you? There are studies that show a correlation between smoking and ED, but if you are a young man there is likely more to it than that. Millions of people smoke and don't have ED. Did the urologist measure arterial blood flow or check for venous leakage? If not then he is not doing his job. Try to find a different urologist, be assertive, and ask for these tests. Do your research so you can make sure that your doc performs all possible diagnostic procedures in order to get a handle on your problem. I am 25 and also have ED from an accident I had when I was 20. My life has pretty much been on hold since then and my ambition and confidence have been destroyed. I admire your positive outlook and I wish you luck.

Viagra has been shown in a recent study to improve erections long term for men who take a 50 mg viagra every night before sleep for a long period. I dont have the link here but I posted it somewhere else in this forum, and you can find it in PubMed. There are no known cases of viagra making men lose the ability to have erections naturally, although as a viagra user myself, I do worry about it.

There are many people here trying to sell herbal remedies that have not undergone any peer reviewed clinical trials. There is no proof that they work, and I resent them posting here. I suspect Lankhas, that you are the same person as rockhard posting under a different name. As far as my advice concerning the urologist goes, I have been to several and they are not by any means equally knowledgeable or competent. My advice try the injections prescribed from your doctor. I'm 40 and have been doing them for 3 years and they work great, your penis will stay hard for at least an hour though, it can be a pain when she goes dry and your sitting there with a rock hard penis, therefore its better than no sex at all,, and it doesn't hurt as bad as you might think.. Talk to your urologist about it cleared my mind and gave me more confidence. Impotence is nothing to joke about it can destroy a persons life. Viagra is safe and it doesn't force anything. It's merely an erection facilitator, not an erection initiator.

And yes, lifestyle changes (quit smoking, healthy diet, exercise regularly) can make a great difference and improve your sex life. Good luck!

im a 40yo man with ED. It sucks

I'm 22, lead a healthy and moderately active lifestyle and am not diagnosed with ED, but I too have problems getting an erection and maintaining it. I often find myself blaming it for the lack of arousal from the girl, but truth be told its happened to me with the last 3 girls so it be pretty harsh to believe that I picked 3 girls I couldnt even be aroused by sexually. I checked with my doctor about it, he suggested psychotherapy too and I asked him for viagra just to test it out. Haven't taken it yet cuz I'm afraid to be all great while on it and then fail once I'm off, and I don't plan on sitting on viagra forever since I'm not even diagnosed with it.
What I realized is that everything's fine during oral sex, but at the moment of putting on the condom following foreplay and then inserting it I lose it in seconds and thats one condom wasted (I cannot try sex w/o a condom we havent been together forever). Only our first time did I manage to maintain it and go at it for 15+ minutes w/o finishing, then when we tried changing positions, goes limp and dissappointment follows.
Just thought I'd share my story and see what you ppl can suggest for me. I personally believe that a relationship can only last when there's both a good interpersonal bond (which we got) and good sexual bond (which is weak and is affecting the interpersonal one). I'd rather tackle this problem with my gf of today than to risk a possibility with the next one and so on.
